Analyze Phytoplankton

I absolutely love working with this instrument, it is a dream. the capabilities are endless, I use it to process daily water samples and it has cut the analysing time in 1/2 if not by more, plus the fact you can store all the old data runs and look back on them whenever you please. It is an expensive instrument but in my eyes it is well worth the money.

Great results, must have equipment in aquatic ecology lab

Average Rating 5.0

Application Area:

Aquatic ecology

The FlowCam is very effective for quick and reliable estimate of number of phytoplankton particles both in natural and laboratory samples. Great device to study zooplankton grazing as it is possible to estimate the amount of particles consumed and size range (selective feeding). It is preferably to use FlowCam with laser to measure phytoplankton as fluorescence helps to distinguish between algae and debris particles. I am using one of first FlowCams (2007 year of production). It is still reliable. Recently I had a n experience to use FlowCam8000 (2020 year of production). Great progress in usability. Now it is even more user friendly and efficient (new camera, new flow cells).

Analyze Phytoplankton

Absolutely love the FlowCam for phytoplankton monitoring - much faster than using a traditional microscope for counting, etc. Also means that every daily flow run can be saved which means you can go back to old runs from past years/months etc. Very easy to use the machine - would recommend using the FlowCam university which helps you understand how to use the instrument/tips for analysis.

Harmful Algae Bloom Monitoring

The flow cytometer with image acquisition - FlowCam - is very useful equipment for monitoring harmful algae, especially here in southern Chile, which we use to serve the salmon industry. It works very well, it works easily and simply and the maintenance cost is not high. Need a technical professional to use the equipment. The software can still advance in many areas of improvement, such as the interface and the classification system, using machine learning. Also as an accumulative and cooperative effect among users.

Great for phytoplankton

Great machine for phytoplankton studies

This machine works well and is a lot faster than traditional microscopy. Although there is a lot to learn with this machine, Fluid Imaging has excellent customer service and is always quick to respond to my questions. The major drawback to this machine is that it is less precise than traditional microscopy so it will not always get you to species-level identification. I prefer to use the FlowCam 8000 to traditional microscopy when possible.

Super useful instrument for my research.

Phytoplankton and zooplankton identification

The FlowCam is great - I love using it more than a traditional microscope. I will say that it is a little hard to understand some of the statistical applications and sometimes the photos don't come out clear but that just means you have to tweak it a little. Doing wild samples leads to more discrepancies but overall the FlowCam greatly enhances my ability to conduct research.

Measuring protein solutions

We only have a problem with filtering particles, after setting filters with groups of sphere and proteins , the system does not recognize them and we have to classify by hand.

Manufacturer's Response

Dear Ms. Petric, Thank you for your valued feedback. We’re sorry to learn that you are experiencing a limitation of our software capabilities. We are actively working on adding a feature that would allow you to perform filtering and subsequent classification automatically to address the issue you describe above. One of our representatives will work with you to ensure that the feature will work as intended. Sincerely, Yokogawa Fluid Imaging Technologies

Evaluation of cell-particle interactions

We used the FlowCam 8000 in recently published work on evaluating the bacterial capture capacity of a novel class of hydrophobic dispersive solvent, magnetic ionic liquids (MILs). The FlowCam 8000 was very useful in providing insights that were not available using traditional microbiological or microscopic techniques. Specifically, we were able to observe the impact of the ionic strength of the medium in which the MILs were dispersed. Parameters examined included droplet size and distribution as a function of ionic content. Of special note, the FlowCam 8000 also enabled us to observe extensive aggregation of MIL droplets in the presence of the bacterium Serratia marcescens, providing insights into the mechanism of action behind MIL-based capture and concentration of bacteria. The details of our study (Hice, S.A., Varona, M., Brost, A., Dai, F., Anderson, J.L. and B.F. Brehm-Stecher. 2020. Pharmaceutical QC & QA, new drug development, medical devices, food, feed and beverages...

Highly efficient and effective instrument in my lab. I am a manager for pharmaceutical and food testing labs for Central Testing Lab facility, Quality & Conformity Council of Abu Dhabi, UAE. We are government entity and enabler for regulators including Department of Health, Ministry of Water, Abu Dhabi Food and Safety Authority, AD Municipality & Environment Agency. We bought our first FlowCam 8000 two year back (2018). We found this machine highly efficient in many areas. Regulators removed dozens of substandard injectable products from the market because of FowCam 8000. Previously, It was impossible to pick defected units by following traditional pharmaceutical monographs for particulate matter. The beauty of FowCam is the evidence of live pictures of particles, which help us in characterizing and understanding the source of contamination. We can recognize, particles up to 1 micron easily which helps regulators to make decisions. Through FlowCam, we are able to guide manufacturers about sources of contamination. We can easily distinguish between fibers, polymers, silicone, dust particles, glass or even microbes. This instrument gave us confidence talking about this because of the real particle pictures we were able to generate. We are able to guide manufacturers about formulation issues. Especially regarding problems with particles due to API aggregates. Live assessment of particles and characterization help us with product stability too. Live, unexpected findings of microbial contamination in food and feed opens a new area of R&D. With the help of FlowCam we are making decisions with confidence. We can carry out particulate analysis in medical devices that was never possible before. Instrument operation is very straight forward. This instrument, does not need much services. Need little care regarding sample cleanliness. Users with little experience can manage the system by themselves. Here in the UAE, we are very lucky that local agent for FlowCam is very professional. Availability of NIST equivalent quality control solution with known particle size and numbers, give high confidence to reporting results to regulators and other clients. We normally start system injecting with blanks, to confirm no particulate contamination from the environment and then quality control (NIST) to confirm count and measure accuracy. Because of this instrument and generated data, we received high prestige and appreciation from higher government entities. Lots of success. More than 20 different parameters about each detected particle can be measured. As per our experience we recorded up to 200000 particles per ml. This shows the system is so fast and smart in capturing the data of each particle accurately. Findings of unexpected particles in food and feed samples, were reported to regulators because of FlowCam. Highly reproducible results for quality control. Very simple operation, need only a few hours to understand and train others. The beauty of system is that no one can manipulate/change the data. It's incompliance with GLP. Raw data is always available in its original form. No comparison with microscopic pharmacopoeia method. This instrument can be applied for pharmaceutical samples especially injections, very useful during formulation and stability testing. Very helpful in medical devices particulate assessment. Useful in marine water testing. Choice of different lenses and objects, based on particle size. Live microbiological identification is also possible through FlowCam. It is worth having a FlowCam 8000 in the lab. It’s a lifesaving instrument.

Application Area:

Flow altology and imaging

The Flowcam is an intuitive and easy to learn flow based particle sizer and counter. The software lets us sort out the particles we are not interested in and it saves images and statistical information. We train end users on the operation of the device and it is something that graduates, undergrads and students have picked up with great ease.
