Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, will be holding a workshop on Advances in Column Technology – Thermo Scientific Hypercarb, in Dresden, Germany on Sunday the 28th of June, preceding HPLC 2009.

Participants can hear from top industry and academic scientists on the latest in research and application advancements using Hypercarb Porous Graphitic Carbon Columns. Ranging from sample preparation to green chromatography, unique separations and improved use, attendees will be able to discover what this unique stationary phase can offer.

The Thermo Scientific Hypercarb Column is a phase for HPLC composed of 100% porous graphitic carbon. It is capable of separations unavailable on silica-based phases, and demonstrates exceptional retention of very polar substances and separation of closely related compounds. Furthermore, Hypercarb is stable at pH extremes, at very high temperatures and is compatible with a wide range of solvents. In addition to the workshop, an anniversary party to celebrate 20 years of the Hypercarb Columns will take place in the Terrase Foyer on Sunday the 28th of June.

For full details and to register for the workshop, anniversary party and welcome meeting please follow the company article webpage on the right hand side of the screen.

To find out more about the full range of Thermo Scientific chromatography consumables, please visit the Thermo Scientific booth # 6-8 at HPLC 2009, 28 June – July 2, in Dresden, Germany. At this exhibition, attendees will also be able to view an extensive collection of Thermo Scientific poster presentations.

o   100% porous graphitic carbon with very different selectivity to reversed-phase silica columnso   Exceptional retention of very polar compoundso   Separation of structurally similar compoundso   Stable from pH 1 to 14 at high temperatures in a wide range of solvents Product detail: Hypercarb is a unique material for HPLC manufactured by Thermo Hypersil-Keystone. Hypercarb consists of fully porous spherical carbon particles comprised of flat sheets of hexagonally arranged carbon atoms. The carbon atoms have a fully satisfied valence and offer completely different retention and selectivity to silica and polymer based phases. Hypercarb can be used for RP and NP chromatography with a pH range from 1 to 14, and at extremes of temperature. Hypercarb excels in the analysis of structurally related components (e.g. stereo- and diastereoisomers and positional isomers) where no separation occurs on conventional materials. Hypercarb retains polar compounds via a 'polar retention effect' where a stronger analyte-sorbent attraction occurs as the polarity of the analyte increases, so the more polar the analyte the longer it's retention time compared to silica-based phases. Due to the unique retention mechanism of Hypercarb, we recommend that you do not use a column longer than 100mm or 150mm in length.  Please contact us for technical assistance. Other column dimensions and hardware designs are available.  Please contact us for more information if you do not see the exact column that you are interested in.
