Product news

Hoefer, Inc. has announced the introduction of a new line of Submarine Gel Electrophoresis units. These new units are constructed with 6 mm heavy duty acrylic and made to endure years of laboratory use. Six sizes are available from quick screen 6 x 7.5 cm Mini Submarine gel units to high throughput 25 x 25 cm Maxi-Plus units, allowing an ideal choice for every application.

A wide variety of combs are available, many of which are multichannel pipette compatible. Color coded and height adjustable combs enable easy identification of gel thickness and control of well depth. Loading strips are included to assist in sample loading.

Many of these Submarine Gel Electrophoresis units include recirculation ports for buffer recirculation during electrophoresis to maintain buffer pH and prevent ionic gradient formation. The Maxi and Maxi-Plus Submarine Gel Electrophoresis units are available with a cooling base for improved temperature control.

The large format SUB25 gel tray has 12 positions to accommodate a maximum throughput of 624 samples. Gel casting is by a cast and turn method or through casting gates depending on the model. An external adjustable casting unit is also available which can be purchased separately.

ElectrophoresisElectrophoresis equipment is used to separate mixtures of protein, DNA or RNA, based on their electric charge, size and other physical characteristics, by passing them through a medium such as a polyacrylamide gel, an agarose gel or a capillary tube. Electrophoresis equipment includes horizontal and vertical gel electrophoresis chambers, isoelectric focusing systems, 2D electrophoresis and capillary electrophoresis instruments. Precast gels with a gradient can be used or gels can be hand cast. Samples are run alongside ladders or markers to identify the approximate size of a molecule. Separated proteins and nucleic acids in the gel can be stained or probed with fluorescent markers and then imaged and detected using gel documentation instruments, transilluminators, densitometers and scanners.
