Product news

The Poloxamer 188 EMPROVE® EXPERT polymer from Merck Millipore is a surface-active nonionic polymer used in cell culture media as a shear protectant and has become a standard component to cell culture media for production processes. The new polymer increases robustness of mammalian cells to shear from sparging, resulting in increased viability of cells in the bioreactor.

For biopharmaceutical manufacturers, Merck's Poloxamer 188 EMPROVE® EXPERT polymer helps to ensure lot-to-lot consistency and reliable performance. The product has been cell culture tested, optimized and comes with EMPROVE® EXPERT polymer dossiers to help manufacturers meet regulatory requirements for risk assessment.

Key benefits of Poloxamer 188 EMPROVE® EXPERT cell culture:

 • Superior performance when compared to different suppliers, batches and quality grades.
 • Lot-to-lot consistency.
 • Shear protection assay as release criteria.
 • Complete GMP documentation with EMPROVE® dossiers.

The Poloxamer 188 EMPROVE® EXPERT product builds on Merck's robust portfolio of cell culture products.

Bioprocessing / FermentationBioprocessing is the use of biological materials to perform commercial, scientific or medical research processes. Biological materials used include cells, enzymes and organisms. Usually bioprocessing requires a batch or continuous bioreactor such as a fermentor or cell culture system. The advantages of using a reactor include high productivity, easy configuration, adjustable values and automation.Cell / Tissue CultureCell culture or tissue culture is used to study the biology of cells or tissues and to isolate cellular products in an environment which can be manipulated and well defined. Accurately control your culture environment with bioreactors or culture incubators, bind your cells to a surface or together with an extracellular matrix. Distinguish cell types with differential media or proliferate cells with certain characteristics using selective media. Enrich your media with supplements such as growth factors, sera and vitamins. The most well known example of a biopharmaceutical product, and the first to be approved for therapeutic use, was recombinant human insulin.PolymersPolymers are large molecules made up of many repeat units. Natural polymers such as DNA and proteins are essential to life, whereas synthetic polymers such as polystyrene and polyethylene are used widely due to their functionality. Typical techniques for analysis include GPC, SEC, DSC, FT-IR and NMR.BiotherapeuticsBiotherapeutics are proteins and other compounds (such as nucleic acids) produced by living organisms that have uses as therapeutics or in in vivo diagnostics.
