Gaelic Laboratories has achieved BSI Kitemark™ Certification for Minimized Risk of AMR, recognizing the company’s responsible antibiotic manufacturing practices and environmental risk management.
The certification follows many months of work to ensure that Gaelic Laboratories’ facilities meet stringent requirements for minimizing the risk of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and aquatic ecotoxicity in the environment, providing assurance to partners and customers across Ireland, Europe and other regions.
Commitment to responsible antibiotic manufacturing
The attainment of BSI Kitemark Certification for Minimized Risk of AMR represents a gold-standard accreditation for responsible manufacturing in the global antibiotic supply chain.
The certification confirms that Gaelic Laboratories practices the responsible manufacturing of antibiotics and addresses environmental waste concerns. The company commits to an approved framework for managing antibiotic discharge and to good practice methods designed to avoid the environmental impact of manufacturing discharges.
Gaelic Laboratories also continually reviews its manufacturing and supply chains to ensure good practice in controlling releases of antibiotics into the environment.
Alignment with the AMR Industry Association’s Antibiotic Manufacturing Standard
The BSI Kitemark has transitioned recently to align with the May 2025 release of the AMR Industry Association’s Antibiotic Manufacturing Standard, which has been effective from January 1, 2026. This Standard provides clear guidance to manufacturers in the global antibiotic supply chain to ensure that antibiotics are made responsibly, helping to minimize the risk of AMR in the environment.
By achieving this certification, Gaelic Laboratories demonstrates that its manufacturing operations are aligned with these evolving international expectations for sustainable pharmaceutical manufacturing and environmental risk management.
Pathway to AMR Industry Alliance membership
Having obtained the certification, Gaelic Laboratories is now eligible to apply for AMR Industry Alliance membership. The AMR Industry Alliance is one of the largest private sector coalitions established to provide sustainable solutions to curb AMR globally, with over 90 biotech, diagnostics, generics and research-based pharmaceutical companies and associations joining forces.
Brian Morrissey, General Manager of Gaelic Laboratories, said, “We are very much looking forward to Gaelic and Athlone Laboratories (our sister company) joining this industry group. We share the goals in terms of providing critical medicines for patients in Ireland, Europe and other parts of the world, while leveraging best-practices to support a broad industry momentum to fight AMR. Membership of this Alliance will better enable us to support those objectives, along with other leading pharmaceutical manufacturers across the world.”
