3M Food Safety have announced the release of its next generation 3M™ Molecular Detection Assays for Listeria, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella have been certified by NF VALIDATION from AFNOR Certification. Earlier this year, all three assays were also designated by AOAC INTERNATIONAL® as Official MethodsSM. These pathogen test kits were introduced last year as part of the 3M™ Molecular Detection System platform, award-winning technology that leverages the combination of isothermal DNA amplification and bioluminescence detection. The test kits are accurate, faster to get results easy-to-use and offer a cost-effective solution with high sensitivity and specificity.

The NF VALIDATION certification process is comprised of two phases, beginning with a method comparison study in which a single, expert lab thoroughly tests the new technology’s effectiveness versus standard methods. Subsequent to that, an inter-laboratory study occurs in which multiple laboratories compare the efficacy of both the new test method and reference method under defined conditions of reproducibility and repeatability.

The validation for the 3M Molecular Detection Assay 2 – Listeria, 3M Molecular Detection Assay 2 – Listeria monocytogenes, and for the 3M Molecular Detection Assay 2 – Salmonella, certifies that the test kits are each equivalent to or better than standard reference methods in detecting those pathogens in all human foods as well as in samples from the food processing environment, excluding primary production samples.

Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes are among the most common pathogens responsible for foodborne illness outbreaks throughout the world, so being able to offer rapid assays for these pathogens that stand up to the rigor of AFNOR Certification criteria is a key milestone for our customers,” said Marie-Pierre Copin, 3M Food Safety’s European Regulatory Affairs Specialist.

MicrobiologyMicrobiology is the study of microorganisms including protists, prokaryotes, fungi, and, often, viruses. Microorganisms are a useful research tool as genetic vectors and, in immunology, for antibiotic susceptibility testing, cellular biology and genetics. Microorganisms commonly grow readily in incubators with microbial culture media; this can contain chromogenic supplements to differentiate between cell lines. Estimate your culture’s density of microorganisms with colony counters, or screen and select colonies for desirable clones with automated colony pickers. Additionally, equipment is available to monitor environments for the presence of microbes and identify with microbial identification instruments. Typical instrumentation includes blanchers, color sorters, cookers, grinders, and refrigeration. These are used to replicate the processes commonly used in the commercial preparation of food and beverages.Food SafetyFood safety describes the prevention of food-borne illnesses. Contamination with a variety of pathogens can be prevented with adequate temperature control, hygiene and labeling. Food samples can be tested using GC/MS, HPLC, SPE, and qPCR to ensure their adherence to regulations.Food TestingFood testing refers to a variety experiments including PCR, mass spectrometry, processing, QuEChERS, analyzing and Kjeldahl.Pathogen DetectionPathogen detection is the process of identifying harmful microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, that can cause diseases. Accurate pathogen detection is critical for food safety, public health, and clinical diagnostics. The assay should be able to characterize novel compounds and measure the potency of these compounds against a validated biological target.Molecular DiagnosticsMolecular diagnostics use an individual’s genetic code and gene expression to diagnose and monitor diseases. The technique is used increasingly in the field of infectious diseases and oncology, as well as areas such as coagulation, HLA typing and pharmacogenomics.
