Product news

Biotium, a leading supplier and inventor of fluorescent probes for life science research, has launched Precast GelRed® Agarose Gels. Designed as a streamlined and safer alternative to traditional ethidium bromide stained gels, these precast gels are set to quicken laboratory workflows and enhance experimental outcomes.

The Precast GelRed Agarose Gels arrive precast and ready-to-use with proprietary GelRed, eliminating time-consuming gel preparation. Simply fill the electrophoresis chamber with TAE buffer, then place the gel in the chamber, load samples, and run the gel.

These time-saving gels are particularly advantageous for streamlining industrial lab processes, educational labs, and highly active research settings. Additionally, unlike ethidium bromide, GelRed offers significantly improved safety and sensitivity. Biotium’s GelRed® Dye provides vivid and sensitive DNA staining, ensuring clear visualization of DNA bands with reduced exposure risks. The 1% agarose gels are ideal for visualizing 250–12,000 bp DNA fragments.

Biotium also offers user-friendly 1X TAE (1L) buffer powder packets that may be used with the Precast GelRed Agarose Gels, providing further streamlined and simplified solutions for DNA electrophoresis needs.

ElectrophoresisElectrophoresis equipment is used to separate mixtures of protein, DNA or RNA, based on their electric charge, size and other physical characteristics, by passing them through a medium such as a polyacrylamide gel, an agarose gel or a capillary tube. Electrophoresis equipment includes horizontal and vertical gel electrophoresis chambers, isoelectric focusing systems, 2D electrophoresis and capillary electrophoresis instruments. Precast gels with a gradient can be used or gels can be hand cast. Samples are run alongside ladders or markers to identify the approximate size of a molecule. Separated proteins and nucleic acids in the gel can be stained or probed with fluorescent markers and then imaged and detected using gel documentation instruments, transilluminators, densitometers and scanners.
