Beckman Coulter Diagnostics will be showcasing its newest acquisition of MicroScan Microbiology solutions on Stand 235 at the 25th European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, in Copenhagen, Denmark. This year’s stand will highlight the power of one smart solution—Beckman Coulter’s customizable microbiology automation solution that is adaptable and scalable to meet the needs of any size laboratory.

The stand will feature:

  • Beckman Coulter’s MicroScan WalkAway System, which delivers automated bacterial identification and susceptibility products, confronting emerging resistance with speed and accuracy
  • Copan WASP® and WASPLab, which improves specimen processing productivity by 30-45%* while increasing quality and reducing turn-around time
  • Bruker MALDI Biotyper identifications combined with MicroScan MIC panels, which offer the optimum combination of accuracy and speed

Additionally, Beckman Coulter will host a symposium titled, “AST and MIC: Central to the Automation and Information of the Microbiology Lab” on 25 April 2015 at 13:30-15:30, Hall I. Topics and speakers include:

  • Introduction by Barbara Zimmer, Principal Scientist, Scientific Affairs, MicroScan, Beckman Coulter Diagnostics, West Sacramento, USA
  • Pros and Cons of Reporting MICS, presented by Edoardo Carretto, Director, Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, IRCCS Arcispedale Santa Maria Nuova, Reggio Emilia, Italy
  • Exploiting Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing by Reporting MICS, presented by Paul Schreckenberger, Director of Microbiology, Loyola University Medical Center, Chicago, USA
  • Integration of AST AND MICS into Automated Laboratories, presented by Hilmar Wisplinghoff, Partner, Wisplinghoff Laboratories, Koln, Germany
  • Laboratory and Clinical Needs: What Part Is Automation, presented by Vittorio Sambri, Associate Professor, Head of Microbiology, Greater Romagna Area Hub Laboratory, Pievesestina, Italy

Clinical MicrobiologyMicrobiology is the study of microorganisms including protists, prokaryotes, fungi, and, often, viruses. Microorganisms are a useful research tool as genetic vectors and, in immunology, for antibiotic susceptibility testing, cellular biology and genetics. Microorganisms commonly grow readily in incubators with microbial culture media; this can contain chromogenic supplements to differentiate between cell lines. Estimate your culture’s density of microorganisms with colony counters, or screen and select colonies for desirable clones with automated colony pickers. Additionally, equipment is available to monitor environments for the presence of microbes and identify with microbial identification instruments.
