GC Analysis of Fatty Acids in Walnuts and Peanuts

11 Sept 2014

Established methods from AOCSR and AOACR can be used to determine the fatty acid composition of nuts. This work demonstrates the application of aspects of these methods in the determination of the fatty acid composition of walnuts and peanuts. Data is presented showing analysis on GC capillary columns of three different selectivities: OmegawaxR, SP™-2560 and SLBR-IL111.

SLB®-IL111 Capillary GC Column

Sigma-Aldrich Supelco

SLB®-IL111 Capillary GC Column for FAME and Petroleum Applications. World’s first commercial column to rate over 100 on our GC column polarity scale. Selectivity most orthogonal to non-polar and intermediate polar phases, resulting in very unique elution patterns. Maximum temperature of 270 ºC is very impressive for such an extremely polar column. Great choice for separation of polarizable analytes (contain double and/or triple C-C bonds) from neutral analytes. Also a good GCxGC column choice.

SP-2560 Capillary GC Column

Sigma-Aldrich Supelco

SP-2560 Capillary GC Column• Application: This highly polar biscyanopropyl column was specifically designed for detailed separation of geometricpositional (cis/trans) isomers of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs). It is extremely effective for FAME isomer applications.• USP Code: This column meets USP G5 requirements.• Phase: Non-bonded; poly(biscyanopropyl siloxane)• Temp. Limits: Subambient to 250 °C (isothermal or programmed

Omegawax® Capillary GC Columns

Sigma-Aldrich Supelco

This column allows highly reproducible analyses of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), specifically the omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. It is tested to ensure reproducible FAME equivalent chain length (ECL) values and resolution of key components. Column Details: Phase: Bonded; poly(ethylene glycol) USP Code: G16 Length: 15, 30 m ID: 0.10, 0.25, 0.32, 0.53 mm df: 0.10, 0.25, 0.50
