Histone H3 is one of the core components of the nucleosome, the basic building block of chromatin. Methylation of histone H3 at lysine 9, which serves to recruit the HP1 protein through its chromodomain, is linked to a number of specific processes including transcriptional repression and the establishment of heterochromatic domains in the genome. H3 lysine 9 methylation is also appears to play a role the epigenetic silencing of tumor supressor genes in several types of cancer.
