The antibody stains specifically the nucleolus and Cajal bodies in interphase cells. The antigen is a constitutively expressed nucleolar component and a specific marker for the dense fibrillar component of the interphase nucleolus. The protein recognized is a 180 kD polypeptide in Xenopus (xNopp180), homologue to the rat polypeptide (Nopp140). When applied at high concentration to human cells the antibody reacts with a nucleolar component which, however, does not correspond to xNopp180
