Measurement of PFAS in complex consumer product matrices

14 May 2024

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of human-made chemicals used in a wide range of products due to their resistance to heat, water, and oil, but are of environmental concern due to their persistence and potential health effects. Syft Technologies discusses how pentafluoropropionic acid (PFPA) and heptafluorobutyric acid (HFBA) were measured in consumer products at low levels despite the presence of highly concentrated matrix volatile organic compounds.

Typical instrumentation includes blanchers, color sorters, cookers, grinders, and refrigeration. These are used to replicate the processes commonly used in the commercial preparation of food and beverages.VolatilesVolatiles are a group of compounds that have a low boiling point and evaporate at room temperature. Volatiles, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), can be used to determine shelf-life of food samples. GC-MS is typically used to analyze volatiles.PFAS
