City of Hope is one of just a handful of Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States as designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). It is here at City of Hope that more than 300 physicians and scientists and over 2,500 employees work to find the causes of and cures for cancer and other life-threatening diseases, including diabetes and HIV/AIDS. City of Hope, located on over 112 beautifully landscaped acres, has 165 licensed beds, 39 of which are devoted to bone marrow transplantation patients.
More than 290,000 volunteers and donors worldwide support City of Hope and make it possible to continue the lifesaving work done here. In fact, one out of every $5 of City of Hope’s operating budget comes from private philanthropic support. City of Hope ranks among the nation's top health-related charities for financial responsibility.
History: Over 90 Years of Healing and Hope
Initially conceived as a haven for those stricken with tuberculosis, in 2004 City of Hope celebrated the 90th anniversary of the pitching of the first two hospital tents... and now celebrates the opening of the new Helford Clinical Research Hospital at City of Hope. The past nine decades have seen the appearance of many historic milestones, leading to COH's reputation as an internationally recognized biomedical research institution focusing on cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. "From its very beginning, City of Hope has been blessed with visionaries from volunteer leadership to a forward-thinking medical, research and administrative staff," COH Board Member Jack R. Suzar says.
Patients Rate City of Hope Highly
Patients gave City of Hope the highest possible rating (three stars) in all categories for combined medical and surgical services in the Patients Evaluation of Performance in California (PEP-C II) survey. PEP-C is the largest scientifically valid survey of patient experience ever published about individual hospitals.
