Grain structure of metallic materials can typically be viewed by light microscopes. The preparation process of samples, also known as metallographic preparation, involves selecting appropriate procedures, selecting chemical or microscopic contrast, and enlargement.  In this application note, Zeiss discusses the various techniques for imaging these grain structures.
