Detection of paraffin oil in milk using the HPTLC PRO System
16 April 2024
Contamination of food with mineral oil products is a significant concern for
food safety. Mineral oils can enter food either intentionally or unintentionally
as contaminants. For companies involved in milk processing, particular
attention is given to detecting batches of milk that might be contaminated
with mineral oil, especially paraffin oil. Paraffin oil is a clear, odorless, and
colorless oil composed of saturated hydrocarbons. CAMAG demonstrates a simple and fast screening method for detecting the presence of paraffin oil adulteration in milk, and highlights HPTLC, which can separate multiple samples at once, as a suitable technique.
