The best tools for DNA and RNA quantification

Nucleic acid quantification (NAQ) determines the concentration of DNA or RNA in a sample, enabling the calculation of the correct amount of nucleic acid required for downstream applications. Using the correct amount of nucleic acid saves time and money, preventing downstream experimental failures, and ensures data quality. Discover how to select the most suitable technology for optimal nucleic acid input, and explore how solutions from Thermo Fisher Scientific offer reliable experimental outcomes, and can help to avoid issues like insufficient amplification or poor sequencing results.

Gold nanoparticle and gold nanoshell analysis

In this eBook, Thermo Fisher Scientific demonstrates the reliability of the NanoDrop™ One/OneC Microvolume UV-Vis Spectrophotometer in measuring gold nanoparticle and nanoshell concentrations. Gold nanoparticles and nanoshells are becoming increasingly popular as delivery vehicles for various gene therapies, and thus research involving them is of growing importance. The quantification of gold nanoparticle and nanoshell concentrations requires high accuracy and the high cost of the product provides incentive to minimize the sample volumes.

Application NoteLife Sciences

Next-generation sequencing sample preparation with the NanoDrop One spectrophotometer

In this application note, Thermo Fisher Scientific demonstrates the accuracy of the NanoDrop One/OneC spectrophotometer in quantifying and qualifying DNA isolated from saliva for downstream next-generation sequencing (NGS). NGS technology provides a genomic analysis to associate diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes with nucleic acid sequence aberrations. NGS can detect translocations, copy number variants (CNVs), insertions and deletions (indels), and single nucleotide variants (SNVs) with high sensitivity, all of which play a role in disease development. Saliva is a common sample type for genomics research as it provides a painless, inexpensive collection procedure.

Application NoteLife Sciences

Detection of RNA contamination in mammalian DNA preparations

Quantification of nucleic acids has traditionally been performed by determining the UV absorbance at 3 analytical wavelengths: 230 nm, 260 nm, and 280 nm. The information derived from these absorbance measurements allows scientists to measure nucleic acid concentration and to have an indication of sample purity. A disadvantage of this approach is the lack of specificity. Thus, any contaminant that absorbs at these wavelengths will lead to inaccuracies in a nucleic acid concentration result. In this application note, Thermo Fisher Scientific show how a newly introduced feature in Acclaro software allows users to detect and correct for RNA contamination in DNA preparations or DNA contamination in RNA preparations.
