"This is a product that only gets used a couple times per week for a few hours for individual courses. I was disappointed that the filter life was not longer for the amount of times that it gets used. It signaled an alarm at the 1 year of life. That being said, the fact that it is ductless and versatile works well in a lab that has no ducting. It allows our program flexibility in the course development in that particular room. I do like the fact that it is monitored by a computer program which allows visual on the optimal working condition at the time of use. It allows for trouble shooting should an alarm signal."

The best thing about this hood is I placed it next to my instrument so it saves me time to walk to another hood to work with samples. The least favorite thing of this hood is the display, I can't see what it is saying because the screen is not bright enough. I would say it is reliable and easy to use. The only drawback is the short lifetime of the filters. With the current sample load, the filters become saturated faster than wished for, necessitating expensive filter replacement and disposal costs. "

I contacted Erlab and they said to place the filter in so as to have the writing 'right side up'.... well, the way it was put together, either way it was put in, some writing would be right side up, and some would be upside down. "The only problem I have with the unit is its sash. I prepare reagents in 4 liter bottles, which are taller than the first opening of the sash. I have to really contort my arm to pipette acids into a 4L bottle of methanol to make mobile phases. If I opened the sash all the way, I wouldn't get any protection from the noxious fumes, which is the whole point of using the hood. However, I work in a small physician's office lab where a full, installed hood with a sliding sash is just not possible. This small fume hood is the best option available for our situation, but it is a bit difficult to use for my particular applications. Maybe another model could be made where the sash can be manipulated horizontally instead of vertically? E.g.- you can remove/ slide the right side of the sash to manoeuvre inside the hood, but the remaining 2/3 (left & center) partitions stay in place so that you are still protected from chemical splashes/ fumes. "

"- We have had the "Toxicap 1200" for many years now (20+) with no mechanical problems. - We use the unit in a controlled environment room, so it needs to be reliable which it is, because a lot of the air in the room is recirculated. - It is right at my work station in this controlled environment room, so I don't have to go out to a different lab to use a "exhausting" fume hood. - Replacing the filters is a bit of a job due to the size/weight of the filters and where in the unit they are located (up high at the top), but the directions given with the replacement filters makes it straight forward, and in our situation, only needs to be done every couple of years due to the smaller quantity of solvents we use."
