Works great for RP-HPLC, but...

"As a long time Agilent user, I want to contribute a word of caution to those interested in using Agilent UHPLCs for salt-containing mobile phases. Agilent customer service (via phone) was surprised that the installation engineer said it was OK to run salts on the instrument. The small volumes cause the instrument to need a water flush immediately after every run, which is tough in our lab. We now have all UHPLC systems dedicated to RP-HPLC, which works VERY well on these instruments. It is also nice to have the purging integrated into the software, enabling us to fully control the instrument from our remote desktops outside of the lab (think COFFEE!)."

In regards to mobile phases with a high salt content, we do have users around the world running phosphate and other buffers routinely. We at Agilent also run similar types of experiments with robust and reliable results. One approach we have been successful with is to work with users to improve uptime by reducing the concentration of the salts while still maintaining sufficient buffering capacity; one possibility is to work with your local Agilent representatives or the phone support team to see if this is an option for your methods. "Excellent for method development 8 columns, 12 solvents, no baseline noise practically Robust - we use it 4 .5 years without any spare part replacement. When call to support then immediately good and useful response. For cheaper system we spend more money to repair and buy spare parts. "

Not much after sales assistance provided so would be beneficial for new users to read a training manual prior to use but very simple to learn how to use through online manual with software. "It is easy to use, and well controlled with Analyst from ABSciex. It is easily connected to systems not sold by Agilent. The negative point would be that the Gameboy used to handle it manually for conditioning or column washing should be comprised in the package. The price of this Gameboy seems to be exaggerated to me."

"It is very easy to use. I am able to extract data at different wavelengths and to extract ion chromatographs. Also it suggests the structures if I enter the mass which I can correlate with my impurities. We have connected this system with 2D applications and it is very easily manageable and we are able to get the data without changing our methods and can still use buffers like phosphate."
