The FluorChem® Q and ECL Plex™: Sensitive and Quantitative Imaging of Multicolor Fluorescent Westerns
17 Nov 2008: Multiplex fluorescent detection allows the detection and analysis of multiple proteins on a single Western blot. The FluorChem® Q provides a sensitive means to acquire high-quality images of multicolor fluorescent Westerns. This application note demonstrates the sensitivity and linear range which can be achieved in using the FluorChem® Q with ECL Plex™ labeled Westerns, and the compatibility of the FluorChem® Q with multicolor Western blots.

2D Imaging with the UVP BioSpectrum® 800 System
13 Nov 2008: Two dimensional SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis remains a cornerstone for protein research, giving an array highly resolved proteins by separating a protein sample first by the isoelectric point and second by size (1, 2, 4, 5). The end result is an SDS PAGE gel with 100’s to 1000’s of “spots”. The individual spots typically represent just one protein, making 2D SDS PAGE an ideal way to isolate proteins for further analysis.

Salmonella Typhimurium Treatment of RFP Tagged U87 Tumors in Nude Mice
13 Nov 2008: Fluorescent protein imaging with the UVP iBox® Small Animal Imaging System has a number of distinct advantages for whole animal imaging (Ref: FP-129, 1, 2). Fluorescent proteins with a wide range of emission wavelengths are available, simplifying multiple label studies. The proteins are naturally fluorescent and require no substrates or cofactors.

Ultra-Rapid and Ultra-Sensitive Detection of Proteins in Chemiluminescent Western Blotting
13 Nov 2008: The UVP BioSpectrum® Imaging System for high sensitivity detection of proteins in conjunction with the FemtoMax™ chemiluminescent-HRP substrate provides for extremely fast and sensitive detection of proteins by Western blot. This application note demonstrates the detection of 6 different commonly used epitope tags using Rockland Immunochemicals’s epitope tag specific antibodies and a new 12-epitope tag control marker.

The Advantages of Fluorescent Proteins over Luciferase Using the iBox® Imaging System for In Vivo Imaging
13 Nov 2008: The iBox Small Animal Imaging System using fluorescent proteins quickly generates high resolution images and provides accurate and reproducible quantitation. The advantages include speed of exposure time, brightness of fluorescent protein signal, and high sensitivity generated by a cooled camera and matched filter sets. The iBox Small Imaging System supplies researchers with comprehensive tools for tumor studies, cancer research and gene therapy.

A Portable Respirometer for the Direct Toxicity Assessment of Wastewater
12 Nov 2008: Direct toxicity assessment is a risk-based approach using biological system tests to assess likely harm to ecosystems in waters receiving effluent discharges. The toxicity of the effluent as a whole is assessed, rather than its component substances. An instrument that can rapidly detect a toxic effect is of paramount importance, not only for detection but also to assess protective actions, in order to safeguard the wastewater treatment plant.

Xanthochromia in Cerebrospinal Fluid
11 Nov 2008: Xanthochromia is the yellow discoloration indicating the presence of bilirubin in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and is used by some to differentiate in vivo subarachnoid haemorrhage from a traumatic lumbar puncture (LP) resulting in blood contamination of the CSF. While both in vivo haemorrhage and traumatic LP result in haemoglobin in the supernatant fluid, only in vivo haemorrhage results in bilirubin formation.

EPA Priority Pollutants in Water
11 Nov 2008: It normally takes some 40 minutes to analyse a 16 component mixture of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) or polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNAs). With the aid of the WaveQuest UV/Visible HPLC detector, this analysis is greatly speeded up to 4 minutes and can now be performed on a routine basis. The WaveQuest detector is very useful in checking for the spectral purity of the fast eluting peaks.

DETERMINATION OF SUDAN I AND ITS ANALOGUES IN FOOD
11 Nov 2008: Sudan I is the common name given to 1-phenylazo-2-naphthol, a fat-soluble dye used industrially to colour oils, waxes, greases, varnishes etc. It has been recognised by health authorities as being potentially carcinogenic, and is banned as a food additive in the UK and across the European Union.
