- SLAS Enhances Service and Support for Members in Asia
Industry News: SLAS Enhances Service and Support for Members in AsiaThe Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening (SLAS) announced today that it has established a member services office in Shanghai, China, along with the dates and location for the 2012 SLAS Asia Conference and Exhibition.
“SLAS has a significant core constituency in Asia and it’s been growing,” says SLAS President Michelle Palmer, Ph.D., The Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT. “Our strategic plan is very clear about how important we believe it is to build and support a truly international membership. In practice, this requires local professional support in Asia where time zone differences alone can create barriers to efficient member communication and service.”
The personnel in the SLAS Asia office comprises a team of five professionals led by Administrative Services Manager Sarah Xiao; and is located in the Wise Logic International Center at 66 North Shan Xi Road in Shanghai, China; telephone number 86.21.51081513.
SLAS’s plans to enhance educational services and make active participation easier for SLAS members in Asia include launching a Standard Mandarin Chinese version of SLAS.org, which will be accessible from SLAS.org, before the end of 2011.
In addition, the 2012 SLAS Asia Conference and Exhibition is being presented June 19-21 at the Grand Hyatt Shanghai. Three hundred fifty participants and 50 exhibiting companies are expected to attend. Educational podium presentations will address topics related to drug discovery technologies, stem cells in drug discovery, and drug discovery from screening to therapy. The event also will offer two pre-conference short courses on related topics to be announced.
Educational content for presentations and short courses is being developed by a team of SLAS member volunteers in Shanghai – the SLAS Asia Conference Scientific Program Advisory Committee includes Chair Mike Zhang of Becton Dickinson; Xin Xie of the National Center for Drug Screening of the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica at the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Ying Yang of LBD Life Sciences; and Zhong Zhong of GlaxoSmithKline.
