Manus is a SelectScience Advanced Reviewer, and has been a Member since May 2014

In 2014, Manus took part in the SelectScience Global Food Fraud and Safety Special Feature, with the filming of a video interview with Prof. Andy Meharg about the quantification of inorganic arsenic in food samples. Manus has worked at the Institute for Global Security for two years, and is focused on developing methods for the analysis of food samples. Day-to-day, Manus manages the ICP-MS facility and is responsible for the running of the laboratory.

Optimizing Methods

When Manus joined the team, there was a lot of work to do to get the lab started, and Manus was involved in the initial setup of the facility. He researched products and helped the team to purchase the Thermo Scientific iCAP Q ICP-MS instrument; while the most recent purchase was the Sercon 20-22 IRMS with an elemental analyzer and a high temperature elemental analyzer. Method optimization is very important as Manus requires efficient, highly sensitive and reproducible results on a daily basis.

Why SelectScience?

Manus uses SelectScience to research new pieces of equipment and find comprehensive methods for optimization. "SelectScience is a great source of methods and applications for different types of matrix and samples. The ability to narrow down the search quickly, shortens the development time."

Mass SpectrometryMass spectrometry (MS) is a powerful analytical technique used to identify and quantify molecules based on the mass-to-charge ratio of gas-phase ions. It provides detailed information about the structure, composition, and properties of compounds and is widely used across fields such as environmental monitoring, materials science, drug discovery and development, food and beverage testing, and wider chemical research. Key MS techniques include tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LS-MS) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS). Choosing from these wide range of techniques and technologies can be a daunting task, so keep up to date with scientific applications, performance expectations, and customer reviews here all in one place. Contamination with a variety of pathogens can be prevented with adequate temperature control, hygiene and labeling. Food samples can be tested using GC/MS, HPLC, SPE, and qPCR to ensure their adherence to regulations.Food ContaminationFood contamination refers to the presence of harmful substances or pathogens in food, posing risks to human health. Contaminants can be biological, chemical, or physical, and their detection is crucial for ensuring food safety. Advanced testing methods like PCR, chromatography, and spectroscopy are used to identify contaminants in food products.
