Determination of Chromium in Gelatin Capsules using an Agilent 7700x ICP-MS

Many medications that are administered orally are enclosed within capsules, frequently made of animal protein (gelatin) which is prepared from various animal by-products such as bone and skin. Some companies in China were reported to have been manufacturing capsules from gelatin made from discarded leather. As a consequence, higher chromium levels were found in gelatin. This application note discusses the need for routine, highly sensitive methods to determine the levels of the carcinogen chromium in pharmaceutical sample types. Results demonstrate ICP-MS methods and the Agilent 7700x with ORS provides rapid, accurate and semi quantitative screening of complex sample types, such as gelatin capsules.
