Shell freezing is the classic method of preparing samples for freeze drying.

By freezing a thin coating or “shell” around the inside of a flask, a greater volume of material can be processed during each freeze drying run than if the flask had been merely filled. Flasks are automatically rotated in a refrigerated bath creating an even frozen layer with a high surface area, ideal for freeze drying.

Shell Baths provide a simple and efficient means of pre-freezing many flasks at a time, with capacities of up to two 2000ml flasks at a time or up to six 150ml.
