Data Capture, Manipulation and Reporting System for Liquid Scintillation Counters

Jane is a generic Liquid Scintillation Counter (LSC) interface program for capturing data from a wide range of LSC instruments and outputting and archiving the data into different formats.

Some 20 years ago, LabLogic was involved in selling and servicing LSCs and one of the ways we were able to offer a competitive advantage was by writing small applications that took the data and did some simple calculations.

Now we find that most modern counters have either their own internal or external PC. The PC will have the manufacturers own proprietary software for setting up each of the protocol counting details and control of the instrument. Most now also have some very basic file generation options. Unfortunately, none of them so far have any GLP/FDA type features such as login accounts with passwords, security levels, audit trials and electronic signatures so Jane has developed to help bridge this gap.

Historically, Jane was modified to work with each counter. Today the latest version 4 has a library of pre-configured LSC makes and models available.

Jane features

The general day to day operation of Jane involves the operator adding a batch to the Queue and when the data appears from the instrument it is written to a file.

This dialogue allows the software to be configured for each counter it connects to (Jane can connect up to 4 instruments via the COM ports. Each one can be a different make and model. The dialogue allows the System manager to define the instruments in terms of Name, make and model, serial number and serial communication parameters (baud rate, stop bits, parity, etc.).

File Formats:
This dialogue allows the user to configure the contents of the output file to be created by Jane after collection of the raw data. System Managers can define any number of output formats depending on the target application (Debra, Excel, etc.). The format is specified in terms of column delimiter (space, comma, tab), file naming convention and the details of each sample (instrument may output up to 20 columns of information but end user application may only be interested in two or three of these).

Report Templates:
This dialogue allows report templates to be configured – the report templates are used at the end of a protocol collection session – each batch in the queue can be tagged to force a report to be generated using any of the templates defined.

Output Types:
This dialogue allows an output type to be generated by selecting a file format and report template from above and then specifying the output path for the data. These output types are then used when adding batches to the queue.

Standard Tools:
The Tools menu also contains the standard LabLogic dialogues for Audit trail, Security Levels, Users, and Signature options.
