The primary constituent of cells and tissue is water. When preserved by freezing crystal formation occurs which can result in deterioration of the quality of the cell or specimen.

However, it has been established that below -130°C ice crystals become amorphous and damage to cells is minimized.

The Sanyo -150°C and -152°C freezers take advantage of this phenomenon and provide a long-term storage environment, previously possible only in liquid nitrogen.

Features include those expected with high quality freezers such as audio-visual alarms for indication of high temperature and power failure, and a digital temperature display and set. In addition to these is a liquid nitrogen back-up system to maintain internal temperature in the event of power failure, a temperature recorder and a 'hot-line' surrounding the lid to prevent frost build-up.

Following advances in refrigeration technology all Panasonic freezers use CFC-free refrigerant gases.
