Rapid Analysis of Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) in Soil and Water by Infrared Spectroscopy
15 May 2013

When an underground chemical storage tank (UST) is removed the surrounding soil must be tested to determine whether the tank leaked, and if so, the extent of the contamination. This note presents an inexpensive test method to quantify the total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) content of the soil. Performed in accordance with EPA method 418.1, TPH testing results in a standardized “number” that helps simplify the decision for clean-up.
