Confocal Raman and AFM Imaging of Paper
13 Nov 2012

This application note from WITec presents many examples of confocal Raman and AFM measurements from several stages of the paper manufacturing process. Also presented are examples where such measurements give more insight into printing and writing on paper. Confocal Raman microscopy provides information of the orientation of cellulose fibers, chemical residues from circulating water or wood extractives on cellulose fibers and coating components. In addition, the roughness of paper fibers can be determined on the nanometer scale using AFM. Confocal Raman imaging combined with AFM can contribute to a more detailed understanding of the micro- and nano-structures of paper as well as vital information in forensic applications.
