Evaluating Active Ingredients in Pharmaceutical Hot Melt Extrusion Products with Raman Imaging

Hot melt extrusion (HME) is an innovative way of formulating pharmaceutical products and offers a variety of advantages over traditional methods. This application note describes how Raman micro-spectroscopy can be used to understand the HME formulation process, assess the effect of the processing conditions, and monitor the quality of the product. A Thermo Scientific™ DXR™xi Raman imaging microscope and Thermo Scientific™ OMNIC™xi software were used to acquire and processing the Raman imaging data. The data provided a visual representation of spatial distributions as well as other information such as solvation, degree of crystallinity and co-crystallization.
