Best hardware on the market.
Application Area:Analyzing concentration
"We demoed several small volume spectrophotometers, and while the Molecular Devices product had superior software and user interface, the NanoDrop from Thermo Fisher by far had the best hardware and at the end of the day it is the hardware itself that matters. We tested several other off brand ones and they were so terrible they are not even worth mentioning. While I preferred the Molecular Devices software, the Thermo software wasn't terrible so it was perfectly adequate."

Excellent instrument. Not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for!
Application Area:Quantification of DNA and protein samples
"For routine quantification, the NanoDrop 2000 is an excellent instrument and is also very reliable. My only minor criticism is that the software could be improved to be more intuitive, particularly for recall and export/printing of data. However, for custom methods the NanoDrop comes into its own. As a protein biochemist, I often want to measure a micromolar concentration of purified protein by UV, based on the extinction coefficient of that particular protein. The NanoDrop is the ONLY instrument we have tried that allows such custom method setup. Once again, the interface for custom method setup is not the easiest or most intuitive that it could be, but it adds powerful functionality that is not presently accessible with competitors' products, to my knowledge."

Great for Antibody/Protein Conc, not very good above 650nm reads.
Application Area:Analysis of Antibody concentration, conjugates and dyes.
"This device is very very good for reading the concentration/OD of materials such as peptides, antibodies, proteins, etc. All of these are measured down around 250-300nm. As long as you remember to run the samples fast, in this range the device works PERFECTLY! The issue is for antibody-dye conjugates where one of the peaks is above 600nm, it starts to get a bit non-linear and by the time you reach 650nm it is significantly non-linear (to the point that it threw off our calculations). As such, it still had great use in quantifying antibody conc, something we did many times a day just not for final conjugates (such as Alexa 647 or Alexa 750)."

"This nano-drop has 8 pedestals which is great for running multiple samples. After having this instrument for a few years I saw that it wasn't producing consistent results. I would load the same samples multiple times (making sure they were homogenous and freshly mixed) and I would get substantial differences in results. I called the support line and the people were very friendly, helpful and followed up. They sent us a reconditioning kit, which we applied immediately and it seemed to take care of the problem. Make sure you always run your samples in duplicate to make sure your machine is consistent. The machine and it's accompanying software are pretty easy to use. We like this device a lot and would recommend it. You do have to make sure you have good technique and that you are able to load all 8 samples fast enough before any of your samples evaporate- causing a failure. With this device I highly recommend reading the instruction manual."

"On the plus side, this spectrophotometer is very simple to use, can measure as little as 10 ng/microl of DNA (the manufacturer advertise 2 ng/microl, but in my hands the measurements are not to be trusted at concentrations below 10 ng/microl), and does not require prior dilution of the sample (1 microl is needed for the measurement). On the minus side, the sample needs to be of high purity in aqueous solution devoid of surfactant (for example no SDS). In this regard, I have found this spectrophotometer not well suited for protein concentration measurements."

"This is a great spectrophotometer, especially for quantifying small amounts of RNA or DNA."
The NanoDrop 2000/c are microvolume spectrophotometers for measuring DNA, RNA, and protein.
As the industry leader in micro-sample quantitation, Thermo Scientific NanoDrop products meet the needs of today’s laboratory scientist— instruments that are smart, simple and robust. Thermo Scientific combines their extensive expertise in micro-sample analysis with an in-depth understanding of real-life applications to deliver the latest in UV-Vis and Fluorescence instrumentation.
Using the patented sample retention system the NanoDrop 2000 accurately measures samples as small as 0.5 µL, and reports sample concentration, purity ratios, and full spectral data.
All NanoDrop products utilize a unique technology that allows a sample to be pipetted directly onto an optical measurement surface. The system uses inherent surface tension to hold a micro-volume sample in place during the measurement cycle. Once the measurement is complete, the surfaces are simply wiped with a lint-free lab wipe.
