"We have had this system for a couple of years now, which was recommended by another colleague here at the Lady Davis Institute and we are extremely happy with our decision. We use the Azure c300 for two applications western blots and agarose gels. We have a very active lab when it comes to western blots and we use the imager on a daily basis and it is very robust and versatile. I have tried several other imaging systems and they are usually too big and take too much space. They also don't have the capability like the Azure c300 with respect to the options. My favorite part of the "Chemi" imaging is the interval photos where you can choose a time point such as 1 minute exposure with you ECL and then the system will take a picture every 1 min 10 times. This allows you to multitask and do other experiments in the lab while the system works for you. The Azure c300 has exceeded our expectations by far and we have not even used it to it's full potential."

"I have used Azure Biosystems C300 in both GEL and CHEM mode to detect my DNA product from acrylamide gel and my target protein in Western blot analysis. With this imaging system, it provided me really clear images. For gel analysis, I have used this one compared to another imaging system (from another company), the C300 gave me a better and higher resolution image which I cannot observe my DNA bands when I was using another. I also used Azure software to analyse my DNA product density to determine methylation level, the software was amazing. It can exclude the non-specific background out and calculate the density only at my target DNA size, this ensures me that my results would be more reliable. For membrane imaging from WB, I also got good images (the resolution was pretty good and the sensitivity was quite high). The software can calculate my protein concentration from each band compared to my protein standard and estimate the protein molecular weight following the presenting bands. Because the C300 is easy-to-used and has a high performance, I could not be happier than this :) Moreover, I'd like to thank Nicole, she tries to show us the useful function that Azure software can do and answer us every question we have."

Great instrument for imaging of chemiluminescence and fluorescence of IB membranes

"The imager works well for both chemo and fluorescence imaging. Only concern might be that the more images are taken, the slower the software works. Maybe it's because of the operating system. Additionally, when more than 10 images are open, the software shuts down and restarts, without losing data. It is also a plus to be able to save every image in a common file extension such as tiff."

"The Azure c280 really is an excellent system, and the service from Cambridge Bioscience (the UK distributor) has been exceptional. Okay, this is the 'budget' model which lacks the fluorescence and near IR capability of the more expensive systems, but what it does (colour imaging/chemiluminescence of proteins/DNA/RNA gel imaging, it does really very well. It is quick to start, easy to use and simple to transfer files from with a small footprint on the bench. What more could you ask for?"

Freedom to capture data for studying proteins and nucleic acids

"Traditionally, western blot detection methods have used X-ray films to capture chemiluminescence. However, the increasing costs for film, reagents, and maintenance made many researchers to shift from darkrooms to more sensitive and technologically advanced digital imaging systems such as Cooled charge coupled devices (CCD) cameras capturing both chemiluminescence and fluorescence images. The two mentioned detection methods allow the ability to simultaneously detect proteins on the same blot minimizing the need for stripping and reprobing leading to an increase in detection efficiency (Mathews, Plaisance et al. 2009).


Here, I will review Azure Biosystems imaging system for chemiluminescent, fluorescent and infrared imaging, and briefly discuss their advantages and disadvantages.


The Azure Biosystems C600 image analyzer


C600 system is the only imaging system available in the market currently with the following features (i) infrared laser excitation for quantitative imaging in the near IR, (ii) picogram detection of proteins using chemiluminescence, (iii) wide range of dye selection with Cy®5/Cy3/Cy2 excitation, and (iv) option of upgradation from the base units c200, c300, c400 and c500. This increases the options of selecting different chemistry for performing western blots by using the same imaging system. Due to the signal stability and low background, detection in the near-infrared fluorescent (NIR) for western blot detection is achievable using the infrared fluorescent dyes. The NIR western detection also offers multiplexing allowing the option to detect multiple proteins at the same time. Azure Biosystems’ c600 system is equipped with two IR detection channels and allows users to study multiple proteins with overlapping in a blot. The image generated can be spectrally separated as the secondary antibodies are imaged in two different channel.


We have compared the image obtained and the analysis results were comparable to other laser detection system e.g. LiCOR odyssey western blot imaging system.


Chemiluminescence continues to be a favorite and sensitive method of detection. Azure c600 provides quantitative analysis with accurate, fast detection with superior sensitivity, dynamic range, and linearity needed for quantitative blot analysis by chemiluminescent means made possible due to the use of the high resolution, F 0.95 fast lens technology. The superiority of the analyzer is evident from the availability to use any HRP substrate allowing users to maintain the same protocol and capture images with the same sensitivity as film without the risk of oversaturation due to the broader window of detection of several orders of magnitude of protein concentration. The c600 can also be equipped with powerful LEDS for Cy5/Cy3/Cy2 imaging or similar dyes thus allowing the users the option to expand multiplexing. The c600 is also able to image a wide range of dyes (excitation maxima from 302 nm to 785 nm), enabling WesternDots™, Stain-Free™ gels and different types of in-gel fluorescence.


The c600 system also is of immense to molecular biologists with the inclusion of UV, white, and blue lights for imaging Ethidium bromide, Coomassie, and non-mutagenic dyes like Gel red and Gel green.

• Analysis software- AzureSpot software is very friendly, easy to use and efficient to detect and subtract the immunoblot background.


Azure c600 machine offers great value for the money as it combines the functionalities of laser NIR imager with chemiluminescent camera in one simple affordable machine.


The after sales service provided by Azure Biosciences is of highest professional standard, with arrangement of hands-on training beginning from installation to detailed explanation of functioning of the machine. The technical team took into consideration about minor technical information while explaining the functioning of the Azure spot software. We had faced problem once with regards to the software and it was promptly resolved by the Azure Biosciences team.


The technical team is also helping us to explain the analysis beyond western to analyze multiplexing on glass bead format as is available for the analysis of many cytokines and key molecules from many supplier as well as thick tissues pre-labelled with dye probe e.g. GFP protein.

"Before purchasing the Azure c600, we evaluated its performance against the Odyssey CLx from LI-COR. The LI-COR and the Azure systems had similar limits of IR-based detection, but the Azure c600 was more versatile (chemi, visible and infrared capabilities), and therefore had more to offer. The c600 has an easy to use graphical interface and offers both default and customizable acquisition modes. The fast acquisition time and the ability to simultaneously detect information from multiple chemistries are definitely what sets this instrument apart from scanning-based imagers. Additionally, the Azure service team is very responsive, making improvements to the software/hardware as per customer demand."

cSeries Features:

  • 8.3 Megapixel camera - Publication quality images are at your fingertips. High resolution over the entire field of view lets you clearly resolve closely spaced bands.
  • Greater bit depth - 16 bit vs. 12 bit collects more signal before reaching saturation. This increases the dynamic range and, as a result, allows greater quantitative accuracy (red).
  • Deep Peltier Cooling - Lower camera temperature (-50 degrees C from ambient) reduces electronic noise. With less background noise, you can take advantage of longer exposure to detect low abundance proteins.
  • Intellicapture Technology - Capture more blot images in the same amount of time. A faster, wide aperture, f 0.95 lens allows shorter exposures. cSeries imagers are automatically focused dependent on sample position. Regardless of the size of your gel, all images are in focus with no adjustment required. Users can start gathering data quickly.
  • Binning - Need more sensitivity? You can trade unneeded resolution for speed and sensitivity. Binning combines multiple pixels into larger superpixels, so images can be acquired faster, or low abundance proteins detected more quickly when resolution isn’t a concern.
  • Automatic Imaging - Select the application, and the system chooses the light sources and filters for you. The motorized, automated filter wheel has 7 filter positions (c200-600) to match fluorophore and dye emissions. Don’t worry about positioning. Images and analysis aren’t dependent on where you place the gel or blot.
  • UV Transilluminator - Dual wavelength (302nm/365nm) transilluminator enables imaging of a wide range of DNA and protein gel dyes. The 15X20 cm transilluminator allows imaging of large gels.
  • Integrated tablet - The compact design saves valuable bench space. Image capture is controlled from the tablet, compatible with existing networks. 2GB for short term data storage.
  • 2-Position Shelf - The auto-detect shelf raises chemiluminescent samples close to camera to increase resolution. Focusing is handled automatically by the image capture software.
  • Integrated Blue LEDs - No need to purchase a separate blue light transilluminator. Image nucleic acids with "Safe" Dyes in the same system as your blots.
