Product News: Fast and Reliable Brettanomyces Spoiler Monitoring with Sysmex

The new CyFlow BrettCount test system is designed for fast and specific quantification of Brettanomyces bruxellensis in wine production

22 Sep 2019

Sysmex announces another advance for microbiological quality control:  A new test system that offers a quick and reliable test for Brettanomyces bruxellensis in all stages of wine production.

Why is Brett a threat?

At their ageing stage, wines are prone to a well-known threat to quality: contamination by Brettanomyces bruxellensis yeast (also known as Dekkera bruxellensis, short ‘Brett’). Without early detection of Brett, the production of undesirable volatile compounds with unpleasant aromas can mask or affect a wine’s bouquet, clearly diminishing or ruining its value.

Until now, laboratories testing for possible contamination by Brett have relied on methods such as microbiological culture or on molecular biological methods such as PCR, which inherently can lead to possible under- or overestimation.

CyFlow BrettCount offers a fast and specific quality control test system

The CyFlow BrettCount test offers a solution to detect Brettanomyces bruxellensis with high specificity, providing a count of only living B. bruxellensis cells.

The CyFlow Brett Count test kit is based on the VIT® technology. Combined with the CyFlow Cube 6 flow cytometer, it forms CyFlow BrettCount test system. Its components are perfectly matched and combine the specificity and speed of VIT® gene probe technology with the convenient, reliable and fast cell-by-cell analysis of a flow cytometer. This makes the workflow fast and easy, and allows highly specific detection of living microorganisms within three hours of taking the sample.

Thanks to the VIT® (vermicon identification technology) gene probe technology, only living microorganisms are detected. In contrast to conventional, culture-based methods, CyFlow BrettCount is much faster, and detects even viable, but non-culturable yeast (VBNC). In contrast to other molecular biological methods, inhibitor components in the sample material do not interfere with CyFlow BrettCount analysis. This means that false-negative as well as false-positive results are practically avoided.
