Lab product reviews can change the world by helping other scientists find the best equipment to accelerate their vital work. Here at SelectScience®, we are dedicated to promoting peer-to-peer communication that will make the difference - but we couldn't do it without our esteemed reviewers. In this regular feature, we put the spotlight on some of our most dedicated and impactful reviewers and find out what inspires them to keep sharing their knowledge with the global scientific community.

This week’s ‘Reviewer in the Spotlight’ is Dr. Guy-Armel Bounda, Biomedical Advisor at Sinomedica and Researcher at the China Pharmaceutical University. His current research efforts focus on understanding the various drivers of invasive breast cancer. In this article, Dr. Bounda explains how communication in science is vital in getting new ideas implemented and discusses the importance of reviews when looking for laboratory equipment.

Tell me about your role and your current research

I am a biomedical advisor and drug expert at Sinomedica, in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China. However, the clinical pharmacy department of China Pharmaceutical University is my research home. By training, I am a clinical pharmacist with an emphasis on toxicology. My current research is to understand the various drivers of invasive breast cancer, in parallel to providing significant contributions in terms of phytotherapy. Currently, I am writing two extensive books: While the first will give us an extensive comprehension of drivers that lead ductal carcinoma into invasive species, the second will highlight the value of the clinical pharmacist in various specialized clinics.

What inspired you to get into the world of science?

Getting into the world of science has always been a desire since high school. Seeing my biology teacher demonstrate how to observe cells just by swabbing the interior wall of our mouth amazed me. In addition, the clinical influence of my mother is what made me decide to pursue a career in science.

Lab equipment reviews are essential because they allow effective communication between scientists.

Why is communication vital in science?

In every area of our life, effective communication remains vital. In science, to innovate or to evolve great concepts, we need to be able to communicate ideas very clearly to the scientific community for our ideas to be well received and implemented.

Why do you think lab equipment reviews are important?

Lab equipment reviews are essential because they allow effective communication between scientists. As they come directly from users, they convey the truth in terms of equipment features. They are a kind of pharmacovigilance for lab equipment. They are true, unbiased, and reflect firsthand usage of the equipment.

What’s your favorite piece of lab equipment?

The BD FACSLyric™ Flow Cytometer System by BD Biosciences is a nice piece of lab equipment. Although a bit expensive, it is highly effective. I believe that passion for scientific lab work is sustained with good equipment.

How do SelectScience reviews help you with your research?

As a researcher and clinical scientist, I am always on the hunt for the latest information that can enhance my knowledge or help in solving issues regarding a project or a topic I am working on. In terms of SelectScience reviews, I believe they provide incredible experience sharing by other peers in the field. These reviews help me understand which equipment to look for based on our expected results.

What would you like to achieve in your work?

There is so much I would like to achieve in my work. One of my goals is to contribute significantly to phytotherapy in the field of clinical oncology (breast & prostate cancers) as well as research into diabetes mellitus. Although tremendous work has been done in the field of pharmacognosy, more is yet to be elucidated on the therapeutic value of natural components and this is another area of interest for me.
