    IRTracer-100 FTIR Spectrophotometer
"The FTIR spec was purchased to give on line IR gas analysis capability to our Mettler thermogravimetric analyser. We are not new to FTIR and have several workhorses purchase approximately 10 years ago that have done well. However, I love this new machine. The software is great and the resolution brilliant. I also like the small foot print. I would consider using this model when I replace my more general FTIRs that I use for solid sample analysis. "

Application area: using with inline Pike gas cell to study gasses from a Mettler TGA

GCMS-QP2010 Ultra Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer
"I have been using GCMS for years and when opportunity came to purchase a multidimensional system came along I looked at systems from several manufacturers. I could not afford a TOF system but quadrupoles are now pretty good for my requirements, and I settled on Shimadzu. The instrument is well made and nicely put together. I particularly like the fact that it consists of a GCMS and a second GC-fid that are connected by a Deans switch, so no secondary ovens. This allows heart cutting of peaks in the fid chromatogram to the second column for GCMS analysis. This allows real deconvolution (in theory) and the cleanest mass spectra I have produced. In addition, the GCMS is fitted with a Zoex big fridge modulator allowing fully comprehensive metabolite analysis. In reality I am still learning what I can do with this system. The software is good and straight forward and I am very happy with my choice. The downside is it’s not for beginners! Using the two machines together requires balancing and a good understanding of chromatography, once the methods are set up however it could be run by anyone with an SOP. By nature, it is slower and more complex than a straight forward GCMS and I would not have only this system in my laboratory, you need a workhorse GCMS also. For fine analysis it’s the bee’s knees.
