The Viscosizer 200 is a new and unique viscosity and size analysis system which is capable of accurate, reproducible measurement of viscosity in sample volumes as low as 10µL. It can also perform a separate size analysis of particles in sample volumes as low as 10nL.
This is a dual-pass microcapillary-based instrument, supplied by a carousel autosampler which allows automated, high throughput sample delivery. It differs from other capillary-based viscometers in that it has two windows burned into the capillary, at each of which UV area imaging of absorbance in the sample takes place. Both size and viscosity analyses are based on time-based changes which occur between the two windows, eliminating the error associated with imprecision in sample injection time in other capillary-based viscometers.
The Viscosizer 200 is adaptable to a wide variety of uses, but is particularly well-positioned to assist in preformulation studies, where sample numbers are high but volumes are very low. It can rapidly provide vital information on the viscosities of a range of formulations at a much earlier stage than previously possible, enabling quick detection of potentially problematic samples and dramatically reducing risk on investment in development.
The system also enables sizing of UV-active molecules present within complex formulations or matrices, lending itself to a range of applications, including the measurement of proteins and small molecules within excipient-laden formulations.
