"Experienced difficulty with getting reproducible results with the autosampler. Changing the column inlet and outlets sides is hard to do (no room) in the oven. Bend several syringes using the autosampler (not sure what happened). "

"There is high quality analysis, however, it is a bit complicated for students to grasp the steps they need to go through for a test or to evaluate a product. I never heard of after sale care, it was when the machine is installed, someone calibrated it with not much knowledge on how to train users to be able to start using the machine. As such, the value of the money did not pay back."

Amazing Hardware, software needs work.

"First off let me say that I really love the hardware, GC using Agilent parts save us a bundle in terms of start up cost. And I really REALLY, like the trap, it is too bad it is discontinued. The software is a dog. I know this going in, because we have an LTQ & a old orbitrap, but quant is really bad in terms of ease of use and the steep learning cure for new users... Did I say I really don't like the software (Xcaliber)"

So far so good when running with the ISQ mass spectrometer.

"This GC is linked to our ISQ mass spectrometer. It has worked without any problems in running GC-MS samples. I would like to see software that can print the actual temperature of the GC in the data that is printed out with the TIC data showing the mass fragments as a function of time and the temperature of the GC on the same graph."

"-we use it with 2 detectors (ECD,FID) -current software (2015) partially too complicated -renaming of the 2 detetctors in something else than front- and backdetector not possible or only with huge effort, -some software bugs greatest flaw however: fan on the top (not the oven fan) does not shut down even if the oven is not heated and gc does not collect data, it runs permanent with an annoying noise. needs current, annoys, and is the first part which clould be defect long time experience not yet available"

Manufacturer's Response

"(1) The fan on top of the TRACE 1300 Series GC produces, on average, around ~20 dB of noise. When a GC (or GC-MS) system is in operation, the noise from the (yet another) GC oven fan (and/or from the Edwards Vacuum RV3 fore pump) does not typically exceed 37 to 42 dB. It is true that if you have an office desk right next to a GC or GC-MS system and you have to spend an entire day next to the instrument, the noise is annoying. It is also true that having an office desk outside of the lab is nowadays a standard practice. Thermo Scientific does not recommend performing 8-hour-a-day office work next to a GC, whoever makes it.

(2) Thermo Scientific offers many software platforms for GC & GC-MS. In all of them it is possible to include the name of the injector or detector module into the tab name.

(3) We at Thermo Scientific GC & GC-MS business unit are very attentive to the quality of our products – both hardware and software, and are committed to fixing any bugs found and reported to us. The only “2015 version of GC software” was released on April 06, 2015 – and we are willing to provide it, free of charge, to Dr. Hesele or any other current user of TRACE 1300 Series GC at their request to usaus.gcms.licensing@thermo.com."
