E N S I G N- Top Loading Autoclave; 100 or 125 litre capacity

The Rodwell Ensign is a compact top loading autoclave with a small footprint and low loading height. It is available in electrically heated version or can be heated by means of an external steam source. Casters allow it to be easily positioned for installation and jacking bolts are supplied to allow for permanent installation.
Service requirements are minimal, as the autoclave is manual fill (electrically heated), however auto-fill is available as an option and three phase is not required for the 100 litre version
Both offer exceptional usable capacity, however the 125-litre variant has sufficient depth for tall objects such as formation vessels.

The autoclave incorporates the revolutionary
24 Programmable pre-set programs
Smartcard Access, supervisor card enables the cycle parameter to be set. Operator cards allow access to program numbers only.
Load activated sterilise timer (ON/OFF)– A load probe placed in the largest load prevents the timer from starting until the chamber and load has reached set point temperature.
Timed Free Steaming (adjustable) for improved steam penetration and even heat distribution between different loads.
Delayed Start. Enables the autoclave to be loaded and set to start a cycle at a pre-determined time specified by the operator. Ideal for media-to-pour media for the morning.
Stay Warm– Holds the chamber warm at cycle complete for ready-to-pour media for some time after cycle complete.
4 instrument drying cycles. Once the sterilise timer has timed out, the autoclave chamber will exhaust. This action causes the chamber to depressurise and cool down rapidly causing excess moisture will boil away.
Self diagnostic. The MP24 clearly identifies the nature of a fault on the LCD display.
PT100 chamber and load probes. Accurate and extremely stable.

OPERATION
Load the autoclave and place the load probe into the largest (simulated) load. Close the lid. The autoclave will not be allowed to start until the lid has been securely closed. Select the program number and press start.
The MP 24 will keep the operator informed on the autoclave status (i.e. ‘Door Open’, ‘Select program’, ‘Heating’, ’ Free Steaming’, ‘Sterilising’, ‘Cooling’, ‘Cycle Complete’). Chamber and load temperatures as well as the program number and cycle parameters are also constantly displayed.
At cycle complete a discreet alarm will sound at intermittent intervals to remind the operator that the autoclave has completed it’s cycle.

SAFETY
The autoclave meets all current U.K. and E.C. safety requirements. Safety devices prevent cycle initiation until the door has been completely closed and door locks are functioning correctly. All locks are ’fail safe’. Two independent circuits operate and monitor the lock status. In the event of a lock fault the autoclave will fail safe and ’Lock fault’ will be displayed on the MP24 control panel. The autoclave will become inoperable if the autoclave is unsafe to use.
Thermal and pressure locks will not be released until the load and chamber temperature is below 80deg c and the pressure is below 0.04 bar.
The chamber is pressure tested hydraulically as well as with live steam and carries a pressure test certificate. The chamber is fitted with a pressure relief valve (in case of over-pressure) as well as over temperature protection.
The chamber has been designed approved by a reputable insurance company. Independent inspection during manufacture can also be arrange for an additional charge.

CONSTRUCTION
The chamber and door are constructed using the highest quality stainless steel (BS 1501-316 S31). The door is secured by a simple two-bolt closure. Sealing of the chamber is effected by a compressed silicone rubber seal. The door locking and movement mechanism is connected to a steam release vent for safety.
All components are mounted within a strong steel framework and with panels that are easily removed for service access. The autoclave is mounted on casters so the autoclave can be positioned and fixing jacks for permanent installation.
The autoclave is manual fill so water supply is not required, but auto-fill and auto-drain and re-fill are available as options.
Although a drain line is preferred, it is not always necessary for the electrically heated version as the autoclave can be supplied with a condense collector to the front or to the rear.

Drain systems

Vacuum Break Filter (Part Number AC 702A): During the cooling cycle at around 100 deg c, an autoclave draws a natural vacuum. At this stage of the cycle, there is a chance that contaminates can be drawn back into the chamber via the drain or from atmosphere. A Vacuum Break Filter prevents this by allowing air to be drawn in via a microbiological filter.

• Increases the sterility of media and instruments.
• Ensures a vacuum is not drawn up from a dirty drain.

Drain Line Filter (Part Number AC 112): A microbiological filter in a stainless steel housing, fitted to the drain line prevents the discharge dangerous pathogens to the main drain. The sterilisation process then sterilises the filter during the cycle. The filter element should be changed periodically
• Reduces the risk of releasing dangerous pathogens into the drain system
• Reduces the risk of releasing dangerous pathogens into the autoclave area from aerosols discharged by the autoclave vent.
Drain line condenser. For use with plastic drain systems. (Part Number AC 110): Introduces cold water periodically into the drain to prevent drain meltdown when the autoclave is connected to a plastic drain system.
• Ensures the autoclave drain outlet is cooled to help prevent damage to plastic drain systems
• Very simple operation
• Few moving parts and requires little maintenance for greater reliability

Optional Water Systems
(15mm cold water supply required, supplied from a 15 litreheader tank and terminated at a stopcock within 2 metres run ofthe rear of the autoclave to comply with regulations).

Header Tank (Part No AC802): If a header tank is not readilyavailable on site, Rodwell can manufacture one ready for installation(built in on Rodwell ‘Herald’ Autoclave).

Electronic Scale prevention (Part No. AC250): Softened watersupplies tend to be very chemically aggressive on welds, stainlesssteel pressure vessels and associated pipework. Hard water cancause reliability problems over the long term on any autoclave. Therefore, if scale is a problem Rodwell offer a unique industrialelectronic scale prevention systems which helps to prevent scale andchalk from clogging steam generators and pipe work. This system hasbeen tried and tested over many years and has proved to be the mosteffective in preventing scale build up.
• Improves productivity and product quality
• Reduces maintenance cost and downtime
• Increases plant and control valve life
• Removes risk of scale and chalk hammer damage.
• Reduces maintenance bills
• Requires no maintenance
• No moving parts

Inlet Water Filter (Part No. AC254): Ideal for auto-fill connection to a mains supply that is high in mineral content. Helps to keep the chamber clean, especially when used in conjunction with the electronic scale prevention device.

Automatic Fill (Part No. AC90): Increases operational efficiency by automatically filling the chamber from a water supply prior to a cycle if the water level is insufficient.
Improves productivity, especially in multi-user situations
Heavyduty motorised ball valve system less prone to jamming compared with competitors auto-fill options for greater reliability and reduced risk of over-filling or flooding.

Automatic Drain and Re-fill (Part No. AC91): Reduces the labour costs and inconvenience associated with keeping the chamber clean. Before cycle completion, water is dumped form the chamber and re-filled with fresh water on initiation of the next cycle. Supplied c/w scale prevention device.
• Enables the generation of cleaner steam for every cycle
• Chamber is easy to keep clean simply by wiping with a damp cloth

Mechanical Water Level Detection (Part No. AC 251A): This is very suitable for automatic fill autoclaves in areas where the water supply is high in chalk levels, which can cause electronic water level devices to become unreliable. A simple float level system is used to control the water level remotely from the main chamber, well away from excess heat and spillages. This is also required on autoclaves where treated water supplies are used.
• Not dependant on conductivity of water supply
• Reduced risk of flooding
• More reliable than electronic water level detection
• Eliminates the need to clean water probes
Direct Steam Autoclave Options
! These options are for autoclaves connected to a mains steam supply
Dry Steam Option for separate steam generator:A simple attachment to the pre-heated steam generator or steam supply for the removal of saturated condense. This enables dry steam to supply to the autoclave, which helps for better steam penetration and enables loads to be removed less saturated than under normal circumstances. (Part Number: AC341)
• Improves productivity and product quality
• Reduces maintenance cost and downtime
• Increases plant and control valve life
• Removes risk of water hammer damage
• Reduces maintenance bills
• Requires no maintenance

Separate Steam Generator Option
The Ensign is available in direct steam format, with a separate 3 three phase, 9Kw pre-heated steam generator. This is ideal for situations where fast cycle times are imperative or in situations where the steam supply can be unpredictable and a back up supply is required. Please contact Rodwell or your distributor for further information.
