"FEI has really good customer support and a friendly, knowledgeable support team. We recently acquired an Inspect F50 and I also have attended a demonstration for Quanta. The Inspect has been used to provide surface analysis of polymer samples, and has been very useful. Though I haven't yet used it, the 3D imaging looks very beneficial."

"I have been working on Quanta 400 & 600 Series SEM's for the past 5 years, the latter 3 on two 650FEG's. These are excellent tools, which puts 2 different FEG's I have used in this same timespan to utter shame. In the 3 categories, I would give the 650F 5, 5 and 4 marks respectively. Likewise, the 400 tungsten tools are excellent SEMS. They have been the best platform, bar none, on the MLA and QemSCAN technologies."

"The main problem, in my opinion, is that the STEM mode has 0.8nm spatial resolution but can not see lattice spacing of 1.0nm or more. STEM mode has 'SEM'-like resolution criteria. The machine is very sensitive to acoustic noise, so I found the specifciations to be mis-leading."

  • Application Area:Surface analysis & TEM sample preparation.

"FEI machines have a very good sample loading method. It is user friendly. However, sometimes the software for the microscope needs a bit of service after using it for a while. There is no TV-mode when focussing the feature, only a faster scan rate can be chosen. But in general, FEI microscopes are very nice and very easy to use."

  • Application Area:TEM Sample Preparation

"The Quanta 3D SEM is a really easy to use dual beam SEM/FIB with excellent ion beam machining capabilities. Beam currents available up to 20nA and quick selection between lower ion currents. The software provided is simple to understand and follow with little room to make error or do anything you should be able to do. The system we have does unfortunately only have a tungsten filament on the SEM which does not perform well and lets the overall system down greatly considering how well the FIB column performs. Sample quality for thin TEM lamella are very good and with lower ion currents can reduce the sample damage."

"Very good quality SEM to use. The images are of very good quality, even at high magnification. Software interface is typical of FEI - quick and easy. I typically use this for bioceramics and minimal sample prep is required as low kV operation produces some fantastic images."

Review date: 27 Apr 2011 | Quanta™ - Scanning Electron Microscope
The FEI Quanta™ line includes six variable-pressure and environmental scanning electron microscopes (ESEM™) and two DualBeam™ systems, all of which can accommodate multiple sample and imaging requirements for industrial process control labs, materials science labs and life science labs. The Quanta line of scanning electron microscopes are versatile, high-performance instruments with three modes (high vacuum, low vacuum and ESEM) to accommodate the widest range of samples of any SEM system. All the Quanta SEM systems can be equipped with analytical systems, such as energy dispersive spectrometer, wavelength dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and electron backscatter diffraction. In addition, the field emission gun (FEG) systems contain a S/TEM detector for bright-field and dark-field sample imaging. Another variable that changes amongst the SEM systems is the size of the motorized stage (50mm, 100mm, and 150mm) and the motorized z-range (25mm, 60mm, and 65mm, respectively). The Quanta 650 and 650 FEG are each designed with a roomy chamber, enabling the analysis and navigation of large specimens.
