When our lab moved, the first instrument we purchased was a LI-COR imager, love it!
Rating: 5.0

  • Application Area:Near infrared western blotting

"NIR western blotting provides superior detection when compared with traditional chemiluminescent techniques. To this end, we migrated into the LI-COR workflow two years ago and haven't looked back. Their product allows you to keep your existing western blotting equipment, and with relatively minor adjustments (changing the secondary antibody, namely), your workflow becomes NIR. Their scanner is easy to use, provides clear images, and their accompanying software makes analysis & documentation easy."

  • Application Area:Visualizing Western blots

"This instrument is extremely easy to use and produces results very quickly. The visual results can be hit-or-miss. Sometimes the image is of impeccable quality, very high resolution, and other times it is grainy and unfocused. I don't know enough about how the image is captured to correct this. Overall I would recommend this product for visualizing Westerns."

  • Application Area:Western blots and DNA gels

"Super high quality results on Westerns. The images blow away ECL-film or HRP/AP color development on nitrocellulose. Directly compared to other (non-IR dye) competitors for linearity of signal detection. Odyssey was the only one that came close to accurately measuring 10-fold serial dilutions of a protein sample over 3 orders of magnitude. Quantitation is believable with this machine & IR dyes. IR dyes have very low background. Sloppy undergrads get beautiful results as long as they process the samples per protocol (stringy DNA will ruin any gel run) and clean the equipment after use (MeOH washes for the transfer sponges are important to do regularly). This machine should be a workhorse for any lab that's doing westerns on a daily basis. Best money I've ever spent on equipment. "

  • Application Area:Western Blot and PCR Gel Imaging

"The Li-Cor Odyssey Fc Imaging System is easy to use and the operation is self-explanatory. Two different wavelengths for western blot fluorescent dyes (680 and 800nm) and PCR gels dyed with gel red (detection 600 nm) are available. Gels and blots can be detected for 30 seconds, 2 minutes or 10 minutes. Quantitative analysis of the spots is fast and easy. Pictures can be exported as .jpeg .tiff or PNG with 150, 300 or 600dpi. The only negative is that the handling of the software could be based more on windows-handling (e.g. shortcuts)."

  • Application Area:Immunoblotting

"The Odyssey Fc Imaging Station has worked really well for our group. It is easy to use and allows us to image our blots quickly. Although it took us a little while to figure out the best (and cheapest) blocking solution for our purposes, our blots look great and the IR dyes seem quite sensitive. We've even had instances where the IR dyes have been more sensitive than traditional ECL and film. We also really enjoy the ease of quantifying our bands with the Odyssey software. Overall, this was a great purchase for our lab, which routinely uses immunoblotting in our work. I would highly recommend this instrument to anyone looking to more accurately quantify their Westerns or streamline their Western blotting."

Review date: 06 Nov 2013 | Odyssey® Fc Imaging System

The Odyssey Fc System is the only imaging system that offers superior chemiluminescent detection and the benefits of quantitative infrared Western blot detection as well as the ability to document DNA gels using the 600nm channel. The Odyssey Fc System allows your lab to combine the proven advantages of infrared fluorescence detection with simple, streamlined qualitative chemiluminescence detection on one instrument.

  • Do More by Going Digital: Get consistent, reproducible digital images, without the hassles and unpredictability of film – so you can analyze your data right away and plan your next experiment.
  • See More with Additional Channels and Clearer Images: Document DNA gels, image ECL blots, and detect multiple targets on the same blot with two channel near-infrared fluorescence. Capture clear, low-background images every time without adjusting camera settings.
  • Discover More with Richer, More Complete Data: Capture all the detail and complexity of your data. With 6 logs of linear dynamic range, your results are more reproducible. Near-infrared fluorescence delivers consistent signals that aren’t affected by timing.
