Octyl Glucoside is one of the most commonly used detergents for membrane protein purification and structure determination. The detergent has been well characterized in its usefulness for extracting and solubilizing/stabilizing membrane proteins in aqueous environments. Octyl Glucoside is also often the first choice for crystallizing proteins. Chemically, Octyl Glucoside is a mild nonionic detergent comprised of a sugar based hydrophilic head and a long aliphatic hydrophobic tail.
Additionally, customers prefer to also use Dodecyl Maltoside, Decyl Maltoside and The NG Class Detergents as their first choice for detergents.
