Submerged horizontal gels offer many advantages for nucleic acid separation, and have become a primary tool for the molecular biologist. Agarose gels are easy to cast and readily dissipate heat. These gels allow sample underlaying and prevent electrical field discontinuities caused by wicks or sample well dehydration. Horizontal systems are more economical and easier to use than vertical systems.
Mini-Sub Cell GT
The speed of DNA separations can be increased using miniature submerged gel electrophoresis. For example, Eco R I or Hind III digests of lambda phage DNA can be easily resolved in 1.5 hours at 60 V using the Mini-Sub Cell GT. Separations of small DNA fragments have been performed in as little as 15 minutes at 150 V. The Mini-Sub Cell GT is about 1/4 the size of the Sub-Cell GT DNA cell, and can resolve up to 30 samples. Its short narrow format allows 7 and 10 cm runs with speed, simplicity, and economy.
"Easy gel casting, however the electrode became damaged after one year."
