"The MALDI-ToF is an excellent piece of equipment that has improved patient care tenfold as the patients can be put on more appropriate antibiotic treatments sooner due to rapid identification of bacterial organisms, especially with positive blood cultures. ID can be done within 20 minutes on a single spot with a QC Bacterial Test Standard spot. Pros: Rapid identification including yeasts Excellent support service based in UK Don't need massive amounts of growth of organism Decreased labour/time from staff required over traditional ID methods Cons: BTS can be temperamental Expense Reagents and parts sourced from Germany (not as good if very urgently needed) Overall opinion: it's a very good addition to any lab, we would struggle (and we have) without it. Just needs work on the BTS problem"

"The Maldi is a highly complex analyzer. It isn't much to look at; but, as they say, looks can be deceiving. It takes what used to require 24-48 hours on the Walkaway (Microscan), literally a few minutes to acquire an identification of a bacterial pathogen. This is significantly astonishing. We are able to begin treatment so much sooner than before. Septic patients get the proper antibiolotics and not just broad spectrum, anaerobes are identified so much quicker, haemophilus no longer requires an additional 24 hours to grow on a special plate; but, can be identified in 2 minutes. Setting up your samples is probably the trickiest part of the analyzer. You have to be very precise on application. Not enough, too much, or mixed will cause you to have some issues and it will not work. Technique is the key. But, as long as everyone has good training and is taught proper technique, the skill will come with practice and time. It is very important that a fume hood be available. This is probably the only drawback of my purchase. It was never discussed or mentioned. The maldi requires very toxic, flammable acids and other chemicals to clean the target plates, and to assist in the identification. Be aware of this and prepared for what you will need."

We are sorry that you feel the information regarding the use of a fume hood was not effectively relayed to you. There is a step in the cleaning process that requires a very small amount of Trifluoroacetic acid (100 µl). Most customers enjoy the financial benefit of using the reusable target plate, however we do offer an FDA approved disposable MBT Biotarget plate as an option for customers that do not want to use chemicals for the cleaning process.

"This easy to use mass-spectrometric device enables a fast and efficient typing of bacteria, fungi and mammalian cells. The workflow to bring e.g., bacterial cells onto a sample plate is greatly streamlined and the subsequent mass recording and typing on the Microflex apparatus from Bruker is ideal, even for non-MS trained persons. I would call it from plate to plate (agar plate to MALDI steel plate). Have fun with it!"

"This product is excellent at giving results to clinicians quickly that saves a lot of time compared to doing a Gram stains, API’s etc. It would have been useful to know about similar products before the purchase. The few areas the lab is having difficulty with is the database of organisms, it is quite vast but there are still some organisms which are not validated. Also some organisms are crossed match e.g. S.oralis and S.pneumoniae."

The MALDI Biotyper identifies microorganisms using MALDI-TOF (Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight) Mass Spectrometry to measure a unique molecular fingerprint of an organism. Specifically, the MALDI Biotyper measures highly abundant proteins that are found in all microorganisms.
The characteristic patterns of these highly abundant proteins are used to reliably and accurately identify a particular microorganism by matching the respective pattern with an extensive open database to determine the identity of the microorganism down to the species level.
