Sarstedt lumox^® multiwell plates are film-based cell culture systems for automated analyses of fluorescence-based cell assays. The plates consist of a black polystyrene base in accordance with the SBS Standard and an ultra-thin (50 µm) lumox^® film base.

lumox^® cell culture products stand out for their very low autofluorescence, high transparency and gas-permeability. Compared to standard polystyrene bases the lumox^® products show a lower autofluorescence comparable to glass, and have a higher light transmission than polystyrene or glass bases, especially at wavelengths of 200 to 300 nm. These properties enable an exceptionally good microscopy behaviour and a consistently high sensitivity for assays, imaging and reader techniques.

The gas-permeable quality of the film base provides a range of advantages for cell cultivation. The cells grow directly at the border between the gaseous and liquid phase where the culture medium cannot function as a diffusion barrier. While the cells are directly supplied with oxygen, metabolic waste products like CO₂ can simultaneously escape. The short diffusion paths ensure an optimal gas exchange and, thus, optimal growth conditions for cells.

In addition to low autofluorescence, high transparency and gas-permeabilty the lumox^® film has a superior chemical resistance enabling a multitude of fixation and staining steps without impairing its low autofluorescence.
