"The WAVE bioreactor systems from GE represent an excellent option for bench-scale bioreactor systems when ease-of-entry and/or fast batch turnaround times are required. While not as automated and tuneable as many similarly priced glass/stainless systems, for routine culture of CHO or similar cell lines they are stable, robust and relatively trouble-free. They are an excellent choice for those looking for a disposable, easy to use and dependable platform for small-to-medium scale protein expression. "

"It is very easy to use for insect , mammalian and Cho cell lines. The tech staff is not too quick to respond to troubles. I've used it since it was invented. Now the GE bought the company, I recommend buying the bags at different companies, like Charter Medical, for instance. GE has priced the bags very high. "

The WAVE Bioreactor system is a cell culture device suitable for applications in gene and cell therapy in regenerative medicine, and for production of human therapeutics like monoclonal antibodies and vaccines. Culture medium and cells are loaded into a single use, presterilized bag known as the Cellbag™ bioreactor. The Cellbag bioreactor is then placed on an electric rocking base.
The rocking motion of this base induces waves in the cell culture fluid within the Cellbag bioreactor to provide efficient mixing and oxygen transfer. The resulting environment within the Cellbag bioreactor can easily support over 1 × 107 cells/ml, enabling sufficient cell growth to produce cell concentrations that are suitable for clinical trials. The Cellbag bioreactor requires no cleaning or sterilization, providing protection against cross-contamination. A range of optional controllers, pumps, and probes allow the culture conditions within the Cellbag bioreactor to be monitored, maintained, and adjusted as necessary.

Principles of operation
For volumes up to 25 l, only one Cellbag bioreactor is needed. This makes the WAVE Bioreactor system easy to use and considerably less laborious than static cultures where multiple bags or flasks are often required. The perfusion culture functionality allows for automated feeding of cultures and maximizes the removal of waste products while keeping culture volumes to a minimum.
The electric rocking base has optimized devices designed to inflate and rock the Cellbag bioreactor for rapid oxygen transfer and mixing. The gentle wave action limits shear stress on the cells in comparison to traditional stirred.
