The device is manufactured from biosafe silicone and the vent is a composite of hydrophobic ultrafine glass microfiber, reinforced with polyester monofilament laminates. A stainless steel reinforcement ring surrounds the vent for added support.
BugStopper will withstand repeated standard autoclave cycles without any reduction in air flow or retention. Repeated use reduces cost per use significantly. BugStopper can be wiped clean and autoclaved loose, wrapped, or on the vessel. Needles may be used to penetrate the silicone portion of BugStopper for use as a sample port or for gas infusion. It is not recommended that tubing be passed
through the silicone wall.
The device prevents bacteria or viruses from entering or exiting the culture vessel while at the same time allowing the free passage of air and gases through the vent layer. It has a filter rating of 99.9% bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) and viral efficiency (VFE).
BugStopper is available in two sizes and simply pushes onto a variety of culture vessels. The device fits inside typical 250 to 2500 ml flasks and on the outside of typical 125 ml flasks. The silicone portion of the smaller BugStopper device can be penetrated with needles for use as a sample port or for gas infusion. BugStopper 10 fits flasks which accept size 8 1/2 to 10 1/2 stoppers (stopper sizes are country-dependent. Sizes stated are those in use in the USA.
