One instrument for many applications.
Rating: 4.3

  • Application Area:Multifunction plate reader

"The intrument comes with preset programs that can be modifed based on user's needs or new programs can be be created by the user. It can be used for a variety of applications, from adsorbance to fluorescence to luminescence. We added two injection pumps, enabling us to perform tests requiring fast kinetics. No periodic maintenance or calibration are necessary. Given the high number of applications, the price is well paid."

Rating: 5.0

  • Application Area:Biochemical and metabolic analysis of bacteria

"We use the plate reader for a variety of absorbance and fluorescence assays. I found it easy to use with user-friendly software. The results generated were great and there is a variety of analytical tools within the software itself which make large volumes of data easier to digest. The best part is the support given from BMG itself; Sarah Dickinson has personally come to the lab on multiple occasions to help us set up new assays."

Excellent quality plate reader and brilliant service from BMG.
Rating: 4.3

  • Application Area:Medical science, research

"We were in contact with several companies before we decided to buy the FLUOStar Omega from BMG. The reps are excellent, give very good advice and do not try to sell you things you don't need. Also the after sales care was/is very good. The engineer came one week after the delivery and installed the device and the next day we had the full introduction with one of the specialists who even helped to set up our protocols and gave very good scientific advice for the next tests. The software is intuitive, but has loads of options and we are still working our way through it. Good thing that the specialists team is able to help you with any questions that come up. I also recommend taking a look into the well-written manual, because it gives good illustrated background information on the different functions. Overall we are very happy with the device, software, and service. It is a high quality device and was a good investment for our lab, we are looking forward to using it to its full potential."

This is my favorite plate reader for assays in cell-free and cellular systems.
Rating: 5.0

  • Application Area:Monitoring oxidants in cells using redox probes, biochemical assays in tissue/cell extracts

"I believe this plate reader provides the best value for the money spent. The PDA detector for absorption measurements allows for monitoring 96 reactions at the same time, making data analysis the bottleneck of the experiment. The regular spectrophotometer is used much less right now! The ability to modulate the signal gain in fluorescence measurements provides a good flexibility for working at various concentration ranges of fluorescent compounds."

Rating: 5.0

  • Application Area:Cell viability, antioxidant, protein, enzyme kinetics assays

Their MARS Data Analysis Software has been especially helpful in visualizing my data, constructing standard curves, applying my own customized calculation formula and many more; all done at a click of a button. I would also be remiss not to mention the 5 star after sales service; responsive and attentive to any of my concerns and questions."

Excellent machine and robust software
Rating: 4.3

  • Application Area:Absorbance, Luminescence and Fluorescence

"Very thorough machine and software, very customizable and flexible for the user - the manufacturers have really thought about it from the User's perspective and to ensure robust output for scientific representation. It may be a little complex at first when using the machine, but the after-sales support/training is very good and the representatives have good expertise and can help users with their experiment planning and analysis. An extra benefit is that they have future-proofed the equipment, you can always add more components (e.g. injector) retrospectively and expand the applications of this machine even more."

Absolutely reliable instrument to measure any kind of assay in multi-well format.
Rating: 5.0

  • Application Area:Enzyme kinetics and cell culture analysis

"We initially acquired the FLUOstar® Omega to analyze probes in multi-well plates. We tested several comparable products but for this purpose it was the machine with the best cost-effectiveness at that time. Meanwhile we established all kinds of assays on this machine ranging from simple DNA or protein quantification over cell culture analysis to enzyme kinetics. The very user friendly software is suitable for beginners as well as for advanced users and the user management makes it easy to separate different users. We now work with this machine for more than 5 years without any major technical problems, which speaks for the good manufacturing of this product. Minor problems were solved by the technical support immediately. In addition, they also helped us to develop customized protocols for our assays. The customer support always informed us about the newest assays which might be of interest for our research and which can be run on their machines. If we ever need a new comparable device we would consider BMG first to all other suppliers, based on our previous experience with them. "

  • Application Area:Label Free Analysis

"Besides typical applications for a microplate reader, I want to emphasize a novel application developed recently for these readers; you can purchase a preloaded micro plate to do Label-Free Analysis of your protein of interest, reducing time and expenses related to expensive labels. At present, the label free instruments (Like SPR, BLI) are quite expensive but with the superior spectrophotometric quality of BMG Labtech Readers you are able to do label free analysis in an easy and affordable way. The software is very intuitive and the readers are very robust. You have a bunch of analytes to choose from and the list is continually growing. The reader is also quite a good instrument to have in your lab as this multi mode capabilities allow you to make all the wide range of microplates assays available in the market."

"good plate reader for luminescence assay with easy software. two injectors for flask luminescence recordings. more injectors (around 10) would be great for dose-response curves."

Review date: 20 Jun 2011 | FLUOstar® Omega Plate Reader

The FLUOstar Omega is a multimode microplate reader perfect for life science research laboratories.

Capable of measuring all of the leading microplate based assays, one of its most unique features is its CCD-based spectrometer. This proprietary spectrometer can capture an entire UV/Vis absorbance spectra (220 to 1000 nm) at read times faster than 1 second per well. This ultra-fast, full spectrum analysis allows for assays not possible on other microplate readers.

Voted Select Science’s Best Drug Discovery Product of 2010, the FLUOstar Omega multi-detection microplate reader offers the following detection modes:

  • Fluorescence Intensity - including FRET
  • Time-Resolved Fluorescence - including DELFIA®
  • TR-FRET- including HTRF® and LanthaScreenTM
  • AlphaScreen®/AlphaLISA®
  • High-Performance Luminescence (flash and glow) - including BRET, DLReady™
  • Ultra-fast, UV/Vis Absorbance

The FLUOstar Omega multimode microplate reader provides users with unmatched flexibility and sensitivity to perform any assay needed in all microplate formats up to 1536-well.

ACU - Atmospheric Control Unit for Cell-based Assays
For cell-based assays, the FLUOstar Omega has a dual gas controller that independently regulates both CO2 and O2. With the microprocessor controlled ACU, oxygen levels can be monitored between 1% and 19%, and CO2 levels can be regulated between 0% and 20%.

Low Volume Measurements with the LVis Plate
For low volume measurements in assays like DNA, RNA, or protein concentration determination, the FLUOstar Omega can use BMG LABTECH’s LVis Plate. The LVis plate has sixteen microdrop wells in which two microliters of sample can be measured.

Upgrades
The Omega microplate reader series has a modular design concept. This enables the FLUOstar Omega to be fully upgradeable to the powerful POLARstar Omega, which can perform fluorescence polarization using Simultaneous Dual Emission detection. In addition, up two reagent injectors can be added for kinetic assays.

Software
The FLUOstar Omega comes with BMG LABTECH's license-free Omega Reader Control software and MARS Data Analysis Software. This highly intuitive software package provides limitless possibilities for test set up, but also offers easy one-click App buttons for the most common applications.

For cell-based assays, the FLUOstar Omega has a dual gas controller that independently regulates both CO2 and O2. With the microprocessor controlled ACU, oxygen levels can be monitored between 1% and 19%, and CO2 levels can be regulated between 0% and 20%.

Applications:

  • Calcium measurements (e.g. Ca2+ flux with Fura-2, Indo-1, FLUO-3/4)
  • Enzyme activity
  • FRET/BRET assays
  • Cell toxicity, proliferation, and viability
  • Cell migration and invasion
  • Stem, mammalian, and microbial cells
