Disappointing product
Rating: 3.0

  • Application Area: KBr pellet making

"1) Manual has mistakes in naming the parts in the specific assembly section for 5 mm evacuable die. 2) Manual does not have technical drawings. Selling mechanical parts like this without showing dimensions and tolerance at which each part is manufactured show total lack of engineering sense. 3) While following the specific assembly procedure, the stainless steel pellet got stucked into the cylinder body when using just hand insertion. The dimension of the pellet was measured to be 4.99 mm. Since the diameter in the cylinder body is 5 mm it is hard to imagine how to insert the pellets inside the cylinder. 4) Though the die is said to be made of 440C stainless steel, it get dents using less then maximum load."

Rating: 3.7

  • Application Area:Battery component characterization

"The only issue I have with this product is that over a year or two of not too frequent use, the tolerance between the ram and the barrel loosens, creating uneven pellets."

Disappointing result for the price paid
Rating: 1.7

  • Application Area:FTIR and UV-Vis sample preparation

"I bought 5 mm evacuable pellet die set that had the most inconvenient manual for sampling loading (Section 6 in the manual). The issue could be easily resolved by including a funnel to the set with appropriate size. Given the price of the equipment, it is possible to include a free funnel. After the first use, one of the stainless steel pellets were stuck inside the die cylinder body and could not be retrieved because the plunger (pushing rod) was not long enough. When I contacted Specac regarding the problem with retrieving the stainless steel pellet, I did not get any help and was ignored."

Good setting (although a bit cumbersome), but the core dies tend to become distorted
Rating: 3.3

  • Application Area:Preparing KBr pellets for FTIR

"The two core dies are simply not hard enough (we use the 5 and 7 mm diameter ones). As a research academic lab, with many students using the instrument, we needed to order or make new ones several times, as they squash on one side and cannot fit in anymore. Now, we do not use them at all."

Size of die diameter could be improved
Rating: 4.3

  • Application Area:Compacting Solder Alloy Granules

"The pellet dies are so beneficial to me and of course to my research. It is easy to assemble, it is user friendly and hassle free. But one thing that I need to speak up about is that Specac should offer a very wide range of the diameter. Like even to 0.5mm. And there should be lots of holes in dies. "

Without this accessory, the preparation of good pellets would be impossible.
Rating: 5.0

  • Application Area:Preparation of pellets for transmission IR spectroscopy

"Together with press, it allows a very fast preparation of solid samples for IR spectroscopy in transmission mode. The obtained pellets are of high quality. The manometer is very accurate, which allows a reproducible result from pressurization of the pellets. The reproducibility of pellet technique of transmission IR spectroscopy is inherently of low reproducibility from the quantitative point of view. However, the obtained pellets are qualitatively highly reproducible."

Great pellet die, I recommended it to my colleagues.
Rating: 4.0

  • Application Area:Materials research

"I used the evacuable pellets dies in my research program for obtaining various kind of pellets i.e. magnesium diboride, oxide powder, graphite, hydroxyapatite, etc. in all cases the dies were very easy to use, easy to clean and easy to evacuate the pellet. they also proved a good behavior in terms of mechanical resistance and endurance. I am really pleased to have such a good product even if they were not designed for this kind of work, but for preparing the infrared pellets which presume the use of another type of powder. "

Great product for daily use
Rating: 5.0

  • Application Area:Making pellet for transmission IR

"Great design, very versatile and high quality, and durable. Low maintenance. Works great for my application."

Review date: 13 Dec 2016 | Evacuable Pellet Dies

Specac manufactures a wide range of high-quality Evacuable Pellet Dies suitable compacting powdered samples into discs or briquettes. These are particularly well suited for the preparation of solid KBr pellets for FTIR molecular spectroscopic analysis and XRF pellets for X-Ray Fluorescence atomic spectroscopic analysis (as required by a number of USLP and ASTM methods), but also find use in a broad range of other applications. Atlas Series Evacuable Pellet Dies are typically used in conjunction with the Specac’s Atlas Series of Hydraulic Press Products.

These Evacuable Pellet Dies produce circular pellets in sizes from 5 mm to 40 mm diameter as standard, but other shapes and sizes are available on request. These pellet dies cover a range of load capabilities. For optimum quality and durability of the pellet die, all parts are manufactured from hardened stainless steel, and surfaces that come in contact with the sample are highly polished. Each Pellet Die comprises an evacuable base, body, plunger, set of pellets, extractor ring, and O Ring Kit. Both Standard Evacuable Pellet Dies are available, as well as a number of Lightweight Pellet Dies. Being lighter, the latter pellet dies are easier to handle in laboratory applications that require repeated pellet preparation.
