Epstein-Barr virus, frequently referred to as EBV, is a member of the herpesvirus family and one of the most common human viruses. The virus occurs worldwide, and most people become infected with EBV sometime during their lives. In the United States, as many as 95% of adults between 35 and 40 years of age have been infected.
EBV is a ds DNA enveloped virus. Its nucleocapsid is 100 nm in diameter, with 162 capsomers. Its membrane is derived by budding of immature particles through the cell membrane and is required for infectivity. Its genome is a linear ds DNA molecule with 172 kbp. The viral genome does not normally integrate into the cellular DNA but forms circular episomes which reside in the nucleus.
