Great liquid dispenser, a must have!
Rating: 4.3

  • Application Area: Acoustic compound/reagent dispenser

"Echo 550 allows users to dispense compounds or reagents in nL quantity, which not only reduces the amount of compound/regent required for running experiments but also provides a safer way to dispense compounds with unknown safety profiles. The Echo Dose-response software requires some training before use, but the dispense reports generated from the software can be imported into LIMS, which is great for analyzing HTS assays. The Echo Plate Reformat software is very intuitive to use and is a great tool for running any exploratory assay. This software is the most popular amount the users in my lab. The weekly maintenance for this instrument is very minimal, but we do need to reach out to the Labcyte engineer when an error occurs since the instrument is quite complex. Overall, Echo 550 has become an essential instrument for in vitro drug discovery in our lab, especially for running any high throughput screening campaigns."

Dramatically improved the quality of my experiments.
Rating: 5.0

  • Application Area:Enzyme inhibitor profiling

"This instrument has dramatically improved the quality of my experiments. Initially it was to get rid of tips and DMSO while now it is changing the way to setup new assays and re-designing the already setup."

What a great instrument, with good customer service on an already reliable machine.
Rating: 5.0

  • Application Area:Cell-based compound profiling

"The draw of the Labcyte Echo 555 Liquid Handler is the speed at which compounds can be added to 384-well plates, and the accuracy and flexibility in which it does it for full integration into a robotic system. The ability to add nanoliter volumes in seconds is of incredible value to large batches of plated cells, and the service is impeccable. I cannot imagine trying to screen the number of compounds against multiple cell lines without the Echo."

I cannot work efficiently without the ECHO.
Rating: 4.7

  • Application Area:Drug Discovery

"ECHO is one of my favorite machine in the lab. I can use the machine to dispense small volume ( minimum: 2.5 nl). The machine has 3 different programs: Cherry Pick, Dose response, and Plate reformat. It is so convenient for high throughput screening. It is very important to have ECHO for Drug Discovery because to can test/screen a lot of compounds and use a very small amount of precious compounds. The machine is reliable, save you time, and very efficient. When I show people around the lab, I show them the ECHO first."

Makes dose response much easier!
Rating: 4.3

  • Application Area:liquid handling

"The ECHO acoustic liquid handler is easy to use and makes setting up dose-response curves of many samples so much easier and quicker than by hand. It is also much more accurate than using a normal pipette as it dispenses 2.5nl droplets."

Rating: 4.3

  • Application Area:Compound Plate preparation and Assay Plate dosing

"We are now having 2 sets of Echo 555. One is installed in May 2008 and it's the first Echo coming into China, with the help of Eric Tang. As with the first one, we met some problems but we overcame them all with the help of Hiro. Both have served us very well."

Review date: 14 Feb 2007 | Echo® 550 Liquid Handler

Imagine preparing assay plates for siRNA screening, compound screening with biochemical and cell-based assays, PCR reactions and more all on a single liquid handling platform, with no tips and no cross-contamination. Labcyte has developed new acoustic droplet ejection (ADE) parameters that deliver built-in intelligence to enable users to transfer many different fluid types from a single instrument. All Echo systems come pre-calibrated so that you can switch among different fluid types with just a click of the mouse. No further adjustment is required for you to be productive immediately. These developments combine the latest discoveries in wavelength, power and timing requirements for ADE with real-time fluid measurement at multiple points during a run. The resulting algorithms solve some of the most significant liquid handling challenges with volatile, low-surface tension and/or meniscus-shifting fluids. Volumetric accuracy and precision for all fluids tested so far—including buffers, nucleic acid and protein solutions, surfactants, serum and cell culture media—are comparable to established performance with DMSO.

The Echo® 550 liquid handler introduced the world to acoustic droplet ejection (ADE). This award-winning instrument remains the proven choice for low-volume liquid handling in leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies worldwide. Like the Echo 520 and Echo 555 liquid handlers, the Echo 550 uses "touchless" ADE transfer technology. ADE uses sound energy to transfer 2.5 nL droplets from Echo-qualified 384- and 1536-well source plates into 96-, 384-, 1536- and 3456-well destination plates. This unique touchless technology eliminates consumable tip costs, washing, and cross-contamination. Unsurpassed volumetric precision (≤ 8% CV) and accuracy (≤ 10% CV) ensure superior results. Independent studies have shown that Echo liquid handlers eliminate false negatives due to sample loss on tip surfaces in low-concentration transfers. Like the Echo 555 liquid handler, the Echo 550 liquid handler reports both fluid volume and DMSO hydration.

Applications:

Compound management
Compound screening
siRNA screening
Biochemical assays
Cell-based assays
PCR
Genotyping
Gene expression
