DPX new – Water-free, less hazardous mounting medium from Merck Millipore without teratogenic DBP plasticizer

Merck Millipore has improved its formula for the well-established, water-free DPX mounting medium and now offers a less hazardous alternative in DPX new. The use of the teratogenic ingredient Dibutyl phthalate (DPB) as a plasticizer has been omitted altogether. This ensures a lower potential health risk for users in histology. However, the refractive index, viscosity and shelf life of DPX new are still comparable to those of the tried-and-tested DPX mounting medium.

New formulation for less hazardous mounting
During fixation, histoprocessing, staining and mounting users frequently come into contact with solvents and solvent-containing solutions.
The carcinogenic or teratogenic nature of these solvents can pose a threat to the health of laboratory staff and pathologists. Merck Millipore has reduced this risk with its new water-free mounting medium DPX new.

DPX new: For histology processing with xylene
Xylene – a very volatile substance characterized by a strong odor – is a particularly hazardous solvent in laboratories. Xylene is often used in the dehydration steps during histoprocessing and prior mounting. In combination with xylene, water-free mounting media, such as Entellan® New and DPX, should be used for permanent mounting and long-time storage of samples. To increase the safety of users, Merck Millipore also offers the xylene substitute Neo-Clear® and the corresponding mounting medium Neo-Mount®. However, if xylene is still the preferred solvent used in the laboratory, DPX new is the ideal, less hazardous alternative.

Contact with DPX new is non-teratogenic
With its improved formulation, DPX new is a further development of the well-established DPX mounting medium. Innovatively, DPX new does not contain Dibutyl phthalate (DPB), thus, the contact with the mounting medium is no longer teratogenic. The refractive index, viscosity and shelf life of DPX new are comparable with those of DPX. If only high quality solvents are used in the preparation of samples and in the staining process, the color stability of samples mounted with DPX new can be ensured for long storage periods.
