"After ten years of use I can say that this instrument is a failure compared to NX and biomek 2000 (we have all of them). In particular the span 8 had a lot of problems, but not just it: every year we have many downtimes (9 in 9 months in 2017) and Backman says that they can't understand why. Now we have been told not to switch the power off.... And every morning we start to work with fear to have blocking errors during the day. We are now considering to get rid of it and have another one, but, based on the FX history, not Beckman."

This is a solid instrument that does not break often, and once set up is easy to use. Not uncommon to large liquid handlers, there are some locations on the work table that are not reachable by all tools.

"We have many xyz liquid handlers and have found that our Beckman Biomek FXs are among the most robust work horses that we have. We use the instrument to dispense medium volume dispenses using picklists, and have found the instrument to be reliable, where end users can start the program and walk away, knowing the instrument will perform correctly. The only caveat I can mention is that with 2 dispense heads on the instrument not all positions on the bench are accessible to both dispense heads. "

"The software on this liquid handler is very easy to use and learn. The software is much easier to use than tecan or Hamilton because of its drag and drop interface. I have been using this equipment for years and it is a serious workhorse. It does not break down often even when being used for 7 hours a day for a couple months at a time. Beckman engineers are reliable and very easy to work with and their support is great, even without a service contract! While it is an expensive product this instrument just keeps running. I've been using it for years and it is great. "

"We have used 4 Biomek FXs since 2005 and they were used very intensively by a group of about 40 biologists. I noticed that it is a very reliable system with great possibilities: simple plate transfers to complex tasks making serial dilutions and preparing a broad range of assay plates. A big drawback is that there was no software updates since we bought he instrument 7 years ago. I have got the feeling that others (Tecan ECO, Janus PE, Hamilton) have very good liquid handlers right now. If I was in a position to buy a new liquid handler right now I probably switch to another brand mainly because of the software."

"The FX is an easy to use instrument with a lot of functionality. There is a lot of flexibility in terms of building pipetting templates for different liquid classes and plate types. Sometimes the amount of functionality can be a little overwhelming and take away from the ease of use. It stores the protocol so that each time you make changes it keeps the previous version so that you never lose protocols. The pipetting precision is very accurate - we use it to transfer 100nL of DMSO and get CV's below 5%."

"Software is intuitive- Drag & Drop based. It's easy to change generic program basics. To get the most out of this flexible liquid handling platform, you need to have a couple of super-users to create more complicated programs/trouble shoot etc. For a higher throughput machine I would recommend a dual arm 96 & 384 head. To do dissolution and have full assay capacity, I would recommend an 8-span with interchangeable 96/384 well heads."

The Biomek FXP continuum starts with a single-pod system. Equip the high-capacity deck with Automated Labware Positioners (ALPs) suited to your application to create a dedicated workhorse system. Choose a 96- or 384-multichannel pipetting head, or opt for a pin-tool system for high-density replication tasks. The multichannel pod heads are easily swapped out for maximum flexibility and system reconfiguration as your needs change. A Span-8 configuration featuring independent well access also is available for tube-based operations and where flexible access to wells in a plate is needed. With the Biomek FXP, the Biomek is just the beginning. Its open architecture allows for integrations of readers, plate washers, labware storage devices and robotic transport systems.
